Canes said F the Russian factor

Description
The first 20 years after the franchises relocation to Carolina, the canes drafted ONE Russian player. ONE! Obviously something would have had to go wrong with that one player for the canes to not draft a single Russian till 2018. In 2001, the canes drafted 15th overall, Russian defenseman Igor Knyazev. I don’t blame you if you have never heard of Knyazev because he never played an NHL game. In fact he never even signed in the NHL. It’s clear this incident rubbed the canes management the wrong way because they didn’t draft a single Russian again till 2018 and with that pick they took svechnikov. Svech was the obvious pick but it was a barrier that was broken by the canes by drafting a Russian. Since 2019, the canes have drafted at least 2 Russians a draft every draft. Partly due to the large draft capital but by also having Russian games either more scouted or just scouted to begin with. Obviously the canes haven’t been against bringing in Russians as they have signed players like Alex semin and traded for others like valentin zykov (yea the canes haven’t been the best with Russians).

True but if you draft a Russian once in the first 20 years, something is obviously up. That’s like 200 plus prospects drafted and one Russian. Something is up for sure.

we didnt have a Russian scout until Dundon came on board and ponied up the money for one (or how ever many we have now). We didnt draft Russians because we didnt know anything about them.

Kinda dumb to just completely ignore 3 major leagues for prospects in the MHL VHL and KHL. The canes automatically rules themselves out of so many great mid round picks. Imagine if the canes picked just one of sheshterkin, kaprizov, sorokin, kucherov, buchnevich, orlov, or any of the other great kid round Russians. Those are the types of picks the current regime would make. So glad we’re going in a better direction.

I think our European guy covered some of Russia but we didn’t have a dedicated guy

Calgary hasn't drafted many Russians historically either. That has changed recently though.

I also think there was a time where ANA rarely did as well.

The flames first Russian was in 1983. They drafted Russians relatively normally from 1983-2002 and then had an 16 year gap from 2002 to 2018 where they drafted only one Russian and since have been drafting them pretty normally since.

Anaheim on the other hand is interesting because in their first 8 years as a team, they drafted 14 Russians. Then from 2002-2019 they drafted one Russian and in the past 3 years they have taken three.

This is an interesting rabbit hole tbh, I’m going to look down it some more.

It's interesting because every situation is different with the players. Looking at your Canes. When the player is already in NA like Svechnkikov, it's a non-factor because you can immediately get the player under contract. Then you look at Trikozov, you may have to wait a bit to get that player under contract and I think teams shy away from that.

The 2023 draft will be a prime example. Michkov should absolutely go second overall, but that team will have to wait a while to get him to NA. Can a team stomach that? In a vacuum, they should but a GM picking 2nd overall may not have the leash to wait until 2026 for Michkov.

That’s like waiting for malkin though. Sure barker and Ladd were there for the taking and would have been more of an instant impact but malkin was the clear #2.

They were bad, cheap, old school and probably avoided the trouble of getting comrades over here. Smartened up at some point. If I recall correctly, the last few drafts CAR kept trading down, doubling their picks, very nice! I just remade every team til 25, crazy how some teams have tons of prospects, some very few. Some teams tons/few Russians, Ds, Fs,...
