Players who were underwhelming this year
Monahan and Tkachuk could be on this team

Why I moved Gaudreau and Monahan - seeing that change is needed. If picks are preferred, whatever. Think we see what we see here..... it isn't working.</div></div>
I think one of Gaudreau and Monahan will be moved in the summer, maybe both.
I don't think the returns for either would be very impressive, I think Gaudreau would have more interest than Monahan though.
For Gaudreau, I think it would be something like the Hall from NJ to ARI deal. 1st and 3rd as well as a pair of decent prospects. Lots of Flames fans would be disappointed, but I think that is about what we can expect.
With Monahan I'd kind of look at the Duchene from OTT to CBJ deal. 1st and a pair of decent prospects.
It doesn't make the Flames necessarily any better, but at LW they can go Tkachuk and Mangiapane in their top 6 and at C they can go Lindholm and Backlund down the middle, while stocking up on some futures. I think it would be a mistake for the Flames to look for "hockey deals", because they aren't getting an equal talent to Gaudreau and you're just holding off the inevitable, which is stockpiling picks because I do think the Flames are very close to being a team that needs a rebuild.

I would rather have a 1st.
Zacha is a very good player but my feeling is the Flames are closer to a total rebuild than they are a Stanley Cup. I'd like to see them start to accumulate picks. Nothing against Zacha though.

The Whats Next Reset
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Bennett is cheaper, has more years of team control.
Blake Coleman got more than Taylor Hall. Same reason.
If Calgary gets to next season with Gaudreau still on books, his NTC kicks in, which would limit his return.</div></div>
Bennett has 1 more year of team control and then he's a UFA.
They will get a 1st for Gaudreau, or they will keep him it's as simple as that.
Most fans will be underwhelmed at what they get for Gaudreau, I will admit that, but a 1st will likely be the headliner.

The Flames absolutely need a 1st in a Gaudreau trade.
They got a 2nd for a bottom 6er in Bennett.

I like both a lot. Cole Sillinger is pretty much the prototype for the type of player Treliving covets so that wouldn’t surprise me

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Duggysdanglers</b></div><div>And Dubé and Mangiapane. They’ve done decently well. One problem has been that they e traded away first round picks at least twice. Once to get Hamilton and then to get Hamonic. I think it’s time to blow it all up or if no one agrees with me. Te load a bit and try again next year and then blow it up after it still does not work.</div></div>
I think they should rebuild, but the ownership just won’t sign off on it. The Flames will continue to float between 6-10th in the conference.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Duggysdanglers</b></div><div>Too true. The Flames have only started drafting well recently. I think their picks last year were pretty decent.</div></div>
Since 2015, there’s been a philosophical change in how they approach the draft. They are coveting players with one or two high end attributes, instead of “safe” players.
Guys like Wolf and Mangiapane are examples.

Question for every fan and ACGM of the Buffalo Sabres
If Beniers is gone, the Sabres likely look at Hughes or Power, whichever is still on the board. Eklund is another option, little bit like Stutzle

Who should Flames try and Draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Gmonwy</b></div><div>Unlike Bennett who is the highest in franchise history</div></div>
At least Bennett is an NHL player.
The real failure was the 2013 and 2014 drafts after the Monahan and Bennett picks. Those were the first two drafts of the rebuild and the Flames struck out on every pick after their 1st rounder in those years. It’s really held the team back along with Bennett only being a bottom 6er. It’s too bad

I would stay away from Raty. I would rather take a guy that has risen up the draft boards throughout the season instead of a guy that’s slid.
The Flames will likely pick in the 7-10 range. You’re looking at the likes of Guenther, Wallstedt, Lysell, Johnson, Edvinsson, Lucius, Sillinger
But to answer your question, they need to draft the best player available. This is an organization without any real high end prospects. It looks like they will be picking in the top 10, they need to make sure they get this pick right

Next Season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>The_Cannon</b></div><div>Don’t you rebuild around chucky? Create a team with the same bite and identity he has and incorporate a good supporting cast around him that’s younger?</div></div>
The issue would be he's two years away from UFA, why would he want to sign long-term if the team is going to tank?<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tkachinla</b></div><div>You never trade Tkachuk. He’s 23 years old.
And CGY ownership will never stand for a full rebuild. What will happen is Treliving will trade Gaudreau and Monahan and target some actual roster pieces and picks and try to do the retool. It’s the last shot he has at keeping his job. He’s on his 5th coach after all. Ownership won’t keep him around to do a rebuild on the roster he stubbornly held on too long with; it’s a retool or a retire for Treliving and he knows it.</div></div>
You're right, they won't actually rebuild and it will be more of the same. Hovering around 6th-10th in the Western Conference on an annual basis. All ownership is fine with just simply making the playoffs.
I also think Flames fans need to be prepared for underwhelming returns for Gaudreau and Monahan. In particular, Monahan.

They may as well trade Tkachuk and Lindholn too.
If they were to tank they need to completely commit to it

That's fair. He's not on a crazy deal and by moving him for half priced Ryan, it doesn't hurt EDM's cap

It goes both ways though. Every team has hits and misses
Tkachuk might be a more valuable player than Laine, but there wasn't a single person who would have taken Tkachuk 2nd overall in 2016.
Then you have Schiefele, people thought he was taken too early, now he's an elite player in the league

He’s a decent bottom 6er. The argument that he’s only in the league because he’s a righty is a bit unfair, you could make that argument for a bunch of other RHS players.
