If it is a “sign and trade”…the retention is applied when the trade is executed so would apply all remaining salary due (current contract and extension).

Would have to be extension in place…or no retention. The acquiring team can still extend 8 years if he is on roster at deadline.

I highly doubt they will trade Tanev to Edmonton unless they get an absolute haul. They're your biggest rival, you need some incentive to help them.

The Lindholm trade got them a significant haul and they didn't retain. If Edmonton gives them a haul sure.
