Description

If a trade does not materialize and cannot find a team on zaitsev's trade list to take him.
De Haan likely looking for some term but Ottawa would probably be somewhere he would consider a 1-year deal simply for convenience/opportunity, and Ottawa has the cap space to pay extra for a 1-year deal.
Leaves cap space to try for Chychrun or someone else at the deadline
Again, would be nice for PD to pull off a trade for an absolute stud, but I don't think we can just stand pat if one does not materialize + JBD/Thomson are not ready. De Haan is a clear upgrade on Hamonic/Zaitsev

Does the fact that Dehaan still hasn't signed a contract make people realize that he isn't as good as his reputation?
He is a solid third pairing guy but is never going to be a 3.5 million per year guy

The number in question is pretty arbitrary. The point is that if Ottawa cannot make a trade, and JBD/Thomson show that they are not ready, it is not good enough that the Sens just roll with Zaitsev or hamonic with Sanderson. De Haan is an upgrade on them even if De Haan may be over-valued. The point is that whatever other teams offer, whether it's a one year or multiple year deals, Ottawa has the cap space to outbid and keep it to 1 year.
