Description

Hughes is a rover and is comfortable everywhere on the ice. But this is more about getting the most out of OEL. As a top pairing they could play big minutes, Hughes can be Hughes, and OEL can just focus on being his safety and making the simple plays in the defensive zone. He was much better under Boudreau last year when he simplified his game a bit.

If DeHaan can be brought in with a low AAV I'd give him a 2 year deal to make it happen. Solid defensively, ideally on the 3rd pair but could play some 2nd pair if necessary, and can also play the right side if the OEL-Hughes pairing didn't work out. Hopefully it wouldn't be long before Rathbone leap-frogs him on the depth chart.

If so then I'm curious to see if they can fit in a guy like DeHaan without Poolman going on LTIR. I think they can probably do something in the $1.2 AAV range.

I honeslty would not hate this. I hope we can replace Myers with a good top 4 RHD and allow Rathbone grow into the 2LD spot which perhaps allows Dermott to get 3LD playing time
