Tried to have Arizona eat 15% of Karlsson’s contract but wasn’t able to do in trade machine (50% total retention with 15% by Arizona and 35% San Jose).

The Sharks might retain some salary but they won't be retaining anywhere near 5.75 million a year for 5 years. They'll probably want the 1st to be in 2023 too. As for Arizona a 2024 2nd round pick isn't enough for them to take on cap dump Zaitsev for 2 years and leper Formenton far less retain salary on Karlsson for 5 years too.

35% would be 4.025 million a year, that's too much to retain for so long too. 20-25% would be more like it.
