Improved 5v5

Description
Replacing Ben Harpur is a must. Via Natural Stat trick out of 221 defensemen that have played at least 197 minutes of 5v5, Harpur is #219 in xGF, #221 in SCF, and #221 in HDCF. Braun respectively is #109 in xGF, #139 in SCF, and #120 in HDCF. Braun is a very solid 3rd pair guy that played with Schneider and is such a massive improvement in the 12-13 minutes a night he’ll play in the playoffs. I see the argument of going for a bigger fish for LHD3, but Gallant is gonna ride the top 2 pairs all the way. Braun needs to play boring low event hockey, not take penalties, not turn it over, and just get the puck out of the zone (while playing sheltered minutes.) Again he’s such a massive upgrade over Harpur that I think he solidifies the defense

The biggest need the Rangers have is a consistent 5v5 scorer. Tarasenko is that guy and I think he’ll thrive on a line with Panarin. I’m hell bent on keeping both 2023 1st rounders. For that reason and for St Louis’s patience they get a 2023 3rd.

The Bonino trade is the exact trade of Cogliano a year ago

I like the creativity with the Tarasenko deal but as adamant as you are about keeping your 23” picks, STL will be equally the other way.

With that being said, I think other teams may be willing to part with a 23” pick so if you’re looking to sidestep that, I would assume it to cost more than a 3rd round pick.

That’s fair. I’m curious how many 2023 1st rounders get traded. 2022 (not a great draft class) had 4 traded. NYR- Copp, Panthers- Chiarot, Lightning- Hagel, Bruins- Lindholm. If 4 2023 1st rounders are traded I don’t think one of them is Tarasenko (Hovart, Chychrun, Meier, Gavrikov)

if you want solid 3rd pair LD Megna could be available with Knyzhov almost back. plus he’s signed next year at league min. should be worth considering.

PHI probably takes that, although: LD they are deep at (provorov, Sanheim, York, Seeler, Zamula, Hogberg, Ginning are all LD in the system right now), Hajek is 24 and while not fully cooked, he probably doesn;t become more than PHI 7th dman so I dont think he carries good value.

To be fair Braun for a 2024 4th might be enough alone, with Hajek as a throw in most probably makes it a done deal.

Good value is most deals, although Bonino is probably worth more than a 5th THREE drafts away
