Demko Trade

Created by: bogdown
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2023
Published: Jan. 31, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Penguins reportedly interested in a goalie, Jarry is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and has ties with Allvin, Rutherford, and Vancouver. This would be some tidy business from the Canucks to trade Demko and get Jarry back, OR trade Demko for a first round pick and then sign Jarry in the off-season.

Jarry is a much better goaltender than Demko. Pens decline.

Jarry is better than Demko statistically and I mentioned in the caption that the Canucks could trade Demko for a first rounder to a team like LA and then sign Jarry in the offseason.

Demko has a .883 SV% this season. Jarry's is .921%
Demko has a .909% on his career. Jarry has a .916%
But yeah, Jarry's absolutely the worse goalie.

Save percentage doesn’t determine who the better goalie is. Demkos save percentage is greatly weaken by playing infront of arguably the worst defensive team in the league. Ask any NHL gm or scout, they’d take demko.
And if you think that Jarry is the better goalie then why would you propose this 1 for 1 trade?

I didn't propose this trade. I'm not the one who published this ACGM.

And I know that save percentage isn't always the best tool to measure a goalie's performance. But discarding it entirely, especially with the delta between the two save percentages being as high as it is, is foolish. How about this then: via Evolving-Hockey out of all goalies to have faced 600+ shot attempts this season, Jarry has saved 9.21 GSAx (15th). Demko's GSAx is -11.35 (50th).

And yeah, your defense sucks. Ours isn't great. In terms of shots against/60 (again via Evolving-Hockey), the Pens and 'Nucks are neck and neck at 7th and 8th worst (Pens let up ~0.4 shots more/60). In xG against/60, Pittsburgh is in the bottom half. The Pens' defense is average at best.

We're being bouyed by Jarry being stellar and a top 6 that can outscore our problems on occasion. The best goalies can steal games. Jarry does that for us a lot this season. I'd argue the Islanders and Predators are in a similar position, only a little more exaggerated. Demko clearly hasn't.

Yeah sure judge Demko off a 15 game tough sample size, not the two previous years of eliete goaltending

Why are the penguins looking for a new goaltender?

Jarry is far from the problem, look at the sh*tty defence in front of him, look at the lack of bottom 6 depth

I'm judging him based off of both. In the past, Jarry and Demko have had very similar careers, very similar numbers. I care so much about those 15 games because that's how he's played recently and the Pens are absolutely in win-now mode. That alone makes Jarry more valueable than Demko *to Pittsburgh*. If they're going to have a shot at the playoffs, let alone another deep run with this core, they need someone who's good *now*. Demko is usually elite. He isn't right now, bad defense or good defense. And Jarry is. Why should we take Demko and hope he returns to form rather than keep Jarry, who's still playing at an elite level?

Because Demkonat his best is better than Jarry at his best. A team in the Penguins situation might have to take a risk like that if they want another shot

Let's assume Demko at his best is better than Jarry at his best. IMO, right now we're seeing some of Jarry's best and some of Demko's worst. If we pull the trigger on this trade, why should we expect to be getting Demko's best? It seems to me like incredible risk for minimal reward. And if we don't get Demko's best, we're in a worse position than if we had kept Jarry.

But I don't think Demko's best is better than Jarry's.
Demko's best season was last year. In 64 games, he had a .915 SV%, a 14.9 GSAA, a 7.3 GSAx and received a 3rd place Vezina vote. The only one of those that isn't his career best is GSAx.
Jarry in the same year had in 58 games a .919 SV%, a 21.1 GSAA, a 6.58 GSAx, and also received a 3rd place Vezina vote. The only one of those that *is* Jarry's career best is GSAA.
Jarry also had Vezina and *Hart* votes in 2019-20. Demko only had Vezina votes last season.

The argument here from my perspective is that Demko has term. Jarry’s future in Pittsburgh is uncertain especially with his injury history. Three injuries in one season is concerning. And with their goalie prospects looking better and better, signing a guy like Jarry to a six year deal like a Markstrom or Campbell could be a huge problem. Demko could be the guy for the next three years on a fair term.
