Description
The TDL Trade is for highest 2nd RD 23' (Philly) or Unprotected 1rst RD 24'. It's a take it or leave it deal. I won't Trade 23' 1rst, it may be our best pick, for several years, and I can get a good Defenseman in the Draft. My offer is fair for basically a 1 and a half year rental.

Lots of praise for Kulich indeed. I just know from what I've read in local media that KH tried to move up in the 2022 draft to select Östlund.

Sabres are gonna give up a high 2nd or an u protected 1st for a guy they’re gonna play on the 3rd pair???

No, i don’t think they are
That would be nutty

And we wouldn’t give up Kulich or Ostlund either

The pick is the cost. And he's an upgrade over Bryson.

I'm not saying Edmundson is worth a 1st(ish), but the idea of a 1st for a 3rd pairing D needs context.
If you're giving up a 1st, it's not just about where that player goes on the lineup, but what other impact and trickle down effect it has on the roster as a whole, and what the market price ends up being for the player you think will best accomplish what you are looking for.

The goal here for example, could be to reduce/ease tough minutes for Dahlin/Power. Less time in the defensive zone and on the PK, could let you get more offensive minutes from Dahlin with more offensive zone starts. That could be enough to justify a 1st. You aren't just getting a 3rd pairing D, you're getting a percentage boost in quality minutes for your top guy.

Then there's the "playoff characteristics" teams are always looking to add, such as veteran leadership and Cup experience, toughness, size, etc., which you can get from a bottom of the lineup player without having to incorporate someone into the top of an already functional lineup.

You also get insurance should someone go down to injury, where suddenly your 3rd pair guy is now 2nd pairing.

There are a lot of reasons it could be worth spending a 1st on a 3D or bottom 6F. It's not as simple as those positions not normally being worth that kind of investment.

We need an upgrade over Beyson, we're not winning a Cup with 73 per. PK.

Best save your assets and get a cheap depth d man instead.

Tampa paid a 1st and a 3rd for an average of 14 minutes/game from Savard.
Chiarot to Florida was about the same price for 17 minutes a night.
That's just the kind of depth teams desire. It's expensive, and it's a luxury under normal circumstances, until it isn't.

You lose one top 4D in the playoffs and it can severely impact your chances. Having a 5D capable of stepping up not only reduces the risk of that happening, but provides insurance. It's an important enough consideration that teams are always looking to add D for the playoffs. Best case scenario is you give up that 1st and don't end up needing more from that 5th D. Worst case is you don't give up the 1st and lose a defender (or two) for even 1 critical game, and your playoffs are over.

Of course you don't HAVE to pick up someone that will cost you a 1st round pick. That's just the price of the most in demand options at the deadline. You can always go for plan B or C at cheaper prices.

Should have just not traded for Dach then... could have used pick 13 on him.

Tampa & Florida we’re legit Cup Contenders
Buffalo is not
It’s just plain STUPID to even suggest that we’d use a 1st on a guy we’d put on our 3rd pair
That Sabres are nowhere close to making a move like that
It’s a dumb idea that makes ZERO SENSE for us

We aren’t “winning a Cup” this year NO MATTER WHAT moves we make
