Realistic Canucks Deadline

Created by: JohnJohnson
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2023
Published: Feb. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Everyone one wants a blockbuster Miller or Demko trade. Let’s be honest that’s just not happening. Canucks need to take a simple and pragmatic approach to the deadline like that looks something like this.

Step 1 -
Trade all pending UFAs with value. No brainer here. Love Schenn but there is more value in the picks he would return. Really think they should get a 2nd for him but if that’s not out there take the best available offer.

Step 2 -
Clear an expensive winger, ex Boeser, Garland, Beauviller, etc.
This will be extremely difficult to do mid season for cap reasons. Boeser is the most possible player to move, as I could see a team turning to him if they lose out on Meir. Canucks should expect a great return here and should absolutely retain to juice the assets coming back. If someone want to give you a second for Garland or Beauvillier, go for it.

Step 3 -
Use accrued LTIR space to retain salary and facilitate big trades. Market value for this service is a 4th round pick, Canucks should be all over that.

Step 4 -
Take some low risk high reward bets on some players. Whether they are acquired through through waivers, cap dumps or prospect swaps, their are players that could potentially be much more be much more impactful to the Canucks than their current teams. Give these players opportunities in Vancouver and see if there is anything there, if not let them walk for free in th off-season, no downside. Guys like Puljajarvi and Gurianov fit this description.
Hoeglander and Rathbone have fallen out of favour in Vancouver. Still a ton of talent there, but could be better used in other situations. Swap them for young players at position of need.

You have 4 retains in there Boeser, Kane, and one for edmonton + Horvat max is 3 slots. Boeser deal imo isn't worth it he's starting to finally heal up from his wrist injury I'd rather hold onto him for a better return or if NJ is willing to part with a 2nd with Walsh I'd do that 4th isn't even worth the 1.65m retention (seen Dickenson for 2 years at 1.3m cheaper contract was a 2nd.

Why are you just giving the Canes Dermott? Did I miss something? I was told by some others on here that he is good.

He’s a good player, solid puck mover but don’t see him having much more potential than a bottom par dman. The issue is that he is constantly hurt. He would have very little trade value because his Qualifying Offer will be 1.75 million this off-season and given his health of late he’s a likely non tender at this point. Like the player but would rather see the Canucks use his spot to develop a younger player.
