Right so we’re talking about trades. There are plenty of incidents of goalies being moved for a first. It’s rare, sure. Isn’t it kind of rare for a reigning vezina winner in his 20’s with two years at a low number being made available? Shouldn’t he be at the top of the market? Haven’t we already established that the top of the market can include a first round pick?

Seems pretty simple here.

As I said above, there's only 1 instance of a goaltender being traded for a 1st in the salary cap era that even remotely worked out for the team that acquired him. There have been fewer than 10 goaltender-for-first trades total in that timeframe.

So to answer your question. No, he probably shouldn't be at the top of market. Goaltender performance is too heavily based on the team playing in front of him, and it's just as likely that he'll be bad on his new team than continue his Vezina-worthy performance.

Grubauer and Fleury are the most recent Vezina-nominated goaltenders that moved immediately after their Vezina seasons, and neither of them were very good on their new teams.

Who cares if it worked out for the other teams? It tends to work out horribly when teams give a 29 year old huge money and max term in UFA, but it happens every year. It happens.

Why shouldn’t he be at the top of the market? Who would be higher?

What does it matter if Fleury and Grubauer weren’t good for their new teams? Are you insinuating that NHL GMs will say, “mmmmm, well 50 year old fleury took a step back, so we’ll pass on Ullmark?”

No, im insinuating that a goaltender's success is heavily dependent on the team playing in front of him, and just because Ullmark is good on the Bruins doesn't mean that he'll be good on a new team. GM's understand this and will be reluctant to pay as high of a price as top quality forwards and/or defensemen, regardless of whether or not he wins the Vezina.
