Description
I'm not sold on Murray and Holl being Game 1 starts, they've had some really good flashes, but Samsonov has been objectively better than Murray regardless of injuries and any stats. As for Holl, I don't know, man. He's a confusing player. He's a solid RHD, but I feel like in weighing the options I'd instinctively go with the pairings seen below, or something along the lines of it (pun intended). As we all know, Kerfoot is a bottom-six player, so naturally, that's where he would go. Bunting-Matthews-Nylander has been effective, and we've already seen how spectacular Tavares-O'Reilly-Marner is. I've seen other takes out there saying that Knies should start on the third line and work his way up, and frankly I agree with that. I imagine that he'd probably flourish with Jarnkrok on the opposite wing given Jarnkrok's speed. Eventually, I would probably think about switching Knies with Bunting, and Nylander with Marner, simply because Knies-Matthews-Marner would be a force to be reckoned with. That's just how I see things, but I believe Keefe is more likely to whip out his favourite kitchen appliance, the Magic Bullet, on his roster.

Holl absolutely starts over both Liljegren and Schenn. Schenn likely gets the 1st two games and Liljegren the rest until injuries happen. You don't sit our best PK defenceman and overall best defensive RD

I'm only saying I would try the lines you see there just to see if it works. I realize that he is one of the better defenders the Leafs have, and sure, I'm no professional by any means, but I just wouldn't sit Liljegren. As much as Keefe has sat Liljegren before, I feel like Schenn, Holl, Timmins, and Gustafsson will be rotating in and out, but the reality is probably closer to all five of them being rotated in and out.

I think when the playoffs come around we may see some games of 11/7 but until there are injuries, some deserving guys will sit. One thing has been clear though, Schenn is not a full time NHL player. His "decent" run of play in Vancouver was a mirage. He just looked better than the absolute dumpster fire the rest of the team was. He's so so so slow and that causes problems. Schenn hits and if you give him sheltered minutes he has some worth but overall he's easily the #4 RD on the leafs. I would likely give Timmins time over him as well but Timmins will be a next year player more than anything.

Yeah, that's fair and all, but I just don't understand benching Liljegren who has been getting better every year and hasn't really experienced major setbacks in his game.

Shenn gives the Leafs options. Teams need to be able to play every way in order to win. Tampa has a heavy bottom 6. The Perry line is slow however below the redline they are effective on the cycle. Shenn is effective at stopping the cycle and clearing lanes. Id say he plays in the Tampa series but if the Leafs were playing say Carolina id say he doesnt play

He still has much to learn still and it's the playoffs. Play whoever gives you the best chance of winning. And Holl does that, whether his haters want to see the good in his game or not.

Schenn vs Tampa's top 6 is a nightmare situation. He'd get hemmed in and crushed. He's the weakest RD on the team.

I'm just not sold at all on the Tavares-O'Reilly-Marner line. They've had such a small sample size, but playing O'Reilly and Tavares, the two slowest forwards on the team, is asking for trouble. One bad turnover in the offensive zone and Tampa will be going the other way with an odd-man rush. Especially with the style the Leafs play, activating the defenceman, I just think it's too risky and we'd benefit more from having O'Reilly playing easier minutes on the 3rd line.

If you believe Holl is the best option at RD you are sadly mistaken. If you are right, Toronto has no chance. Best chance is,
Rielly/Schenn
McCabe/Brodie
Giordano/Liljegren
Holl should only play if they decide to go with 11/7.

The only thing that supports that belief is mob think. Literally every stat available points to him being way better defensively than Liljegren and infinitely better than Schenn. Schenn hits and people like that but he so so so so slow. He can't handle the puck and he gets helmed in often because he's always the 2nd guy to the puck. He may start over Liljegren in the first couple games but not beyond that unless injuries happen.
