Description
I did not get PLD or Hart. PLD will be available next offseason and were not pushing for the playoffs this season anyways, so we can wait on him. As for Hart, Montembault played pretty well this year, well enough to where it is not worth giving up a large amount of assets for Hart which would only be a small upgrade

Calgary: Kadri needs a scoring left winger. Even if Hoffman cannot drive play, he can occasionally pot the puck in the back of the net and will help a team like Calgary who needs depth scoring

Pittsburgh: Granlund was doing pretty good this season before the trade to Pittsburgh, and under a more creative system in Montreal, he may be able to find his scoring touch again similar to Monahan and be dealt at the deadline at 50% or kept around.

Minny: Minnesota grabs a middle 6C who can penalty kill for a well-developping 4th rounder, probably worth a 2nd or 3rd rounder now and a 5th

In 2 years from now, Monahan, Granlund and Armia will all be off the books, that is the year we can really try and make a push for the playoffs, this upcoming season will be the last one where we really load up on futures

Hmmm...might take more than two 3rds to convince me to bring Granlund in, with two more years at $5.0m. If the Habs were to bring him in, I don't think they would sign Monahan.

Also, you mentioned waiting a year for Dubois. Bringing Granlund in, and signing Monahan for two years would make it a lot harder for the Habs to fit him in as a UFA.

Two free picks just to take a player on a bad contract from a team who need's cap flexibility is exactly the kind of thing the rebuilding teams do.

As for fitting in Dubois with bringing in Monahan and Granlund. Might be better to sign Monohan to just one year instead of two, and assume that one comes off the books next year at half retained, can only have three retentions at a time so Hoffman, Edmunson, then one of Granlund or Monohan for 2023-2024. No matter what Eddy and Hoffman's contract retentions come off right in time to make cap for Dubois at the end of 2023-2024, then Granlund's 5 or Monahan's 4ish comes off the books just in time to sign guys like Slaf/Ghule going into 2025-2026.

Gurianov is not going to dig pucks out of the corners for Nick & Cole. I would be shocked if they brought him back.

I get that. But it costed CGY a 1st to ship Monahan's contract to MTL, with only 1-year remaining, at $6.375m. I understand that Monahan came with injury concerns, which is not quite the case with Granlund, and that Granlund's contract is a bit cheaper, but that extra year to his contract is still a burden that not many team outhere can afford. Granlund didn't exactly end the season on a good streak; 5 points in 21 games in Pittsburgh. That's a tough sell, especially to a team looking to either acquire Dubois this summer, or make a strong push for him as a UFA next year. With 7 picks in the first 4 rounds this year, I'm not sure Hughes is looking for quantity over quality. Both of those 3rd should be in the lower half...I think one of those need to be a 2nd for Hughes to consider it.

Drafting is a crapshoot, quantity is just as important as quality when it comes to later rounds, guys like Gally, Roy, Farrell came from having late picks and getting luckily that those guy's did (Or hopefully will) pan out.

Definitely see where you're coming from though, but we're not exactly trying to be good next year. Treat Granlund as a redemption project that we might be able to flip to a contender, if we can't we still get the picks out of it and he walks when his contract expires.
