The Yotes are high on Cooley, i think it would have to be Geekie or someone else to make that move

He can be the highest paid player in the league and play for his home town. A deal would get done.

How does that sound appealing to Arizona at all?

As for his trade value as a pending UFA. Go look up Erik Karlsson, the value would be roughly the same

Every word of that statement. Arizona would LOVE to have Matthews as the highest paid player in the league, because it would be a marketing dream come true for a franchise that is litterly in the toilet from a PR standpoint (Propped up by the league, no stadium, no big named players).

And Erik Karlsson??? That is your comparison for a franchise Center? The guy with no knees that managed to put up gaudy numbers for a franchise that played zero defense?

You must be new to watching hockey if you think Karlsson wasn't a franchise level talent in his mid 20's. The guy just had the first 100 point season by a defensemen in in 30 years and that's still not as good as he used to be. He singlehandedly carried Ottawa to game 7 of the conference finals in 2016.

How does having the highest paid player help Arizona at all? They are clearly trying to save money. Also if they are so confident Matthews would be willing to sign there why would they not just keep all their picks/prospects and try to sign him a year later?

So you are saying 3 firsts and 2 seconds and 2 replacement players?

They would love to have him so much they could just wait until he hits FA and sign him for free. If he wants to come home, he will. They JUST drafted Cooley, signed Crouse long term, and are going to be relying on Hayton as a middle 6 C moving forward. Why are they moving all of these pieces plus two firsts for a dude they can persuade to come home for free lmfao.

Even after the trade, they still aren't near contention. No need to speed up the rebuild.

3 1sts? They got a 1st and a top prospect in that trade, and the 3rd in the offer was some really weird condition. I definitely wouldn't call Tierney and DeMelo "replacement players" at that time. Tierney was coming off a 40 point season as a 23 year old and DeMelo was looking like a very promising young RD.
