A Granlund buyout costs $833k next year and $1.833M for 3 years after while the salary cap increases in those years. The downside is fairly minimal.
And there's no chance in hell that the Pens' 1st is used in a cap dump. If I'm getting someone back for that pick, I want it to be someone who will make a noticible positive impact, not a player that's just going to be a repeat of Kapenen's tenure in Pittsburgh.

Pens decline. They aren’t going to pay the 14th pick in a deep draft to exchange cap dumps and take on the worse one. Pens will just buyout Granlund and only have to deal with an 833k hit this year and less than 2 million the following 3.

if they truly don't want michkov, its not bad at all to move down 3 spots to acquire so capital and still get one of the guys remaining that they would otherwise pick at 5

Because his QO is 2.9 million. He’s also arbitration eligible. Which means he could get more and the pens can’t walk away. Gurianov has been…well not good. We could have just kept Kapanen for that.
Granlund however can be bought out and his cap hit would only be 833k this year and 1.833 million next 3 years.
So why would we want to spend a 1st and 2 million+ in extra cap for someone who is a lateral move at best.
