No, thanks. We're not going to completely reverse our team philosophy and try to become another top-heavy also-ran like Edmonton and Toronto. If Matthews wants to sign here, we can afford to wait for him to become a free agent. Moreover, as you can see from this construction, the result of acquiring Matthews now is a forced trade of a perfectly good bottom-6 center due to cap pressure, worse goaltending (!), and a 21-man roster and that's with a completely unrealistic figure for Gavrikov, who will get at least twice that amount and may get three times as much. (Most of us LA fans hope to resign him for $4 to $4.25 million, but we may be optimistic.)

Denault isn't waiving. I think it's an overpay to acquire Matthews. As a Leaf fan, and if the Leafs are in win mode, I'd by happy Byfield (or Vilardi) Brandt (or Durzi) and Iafello and a first. Even if the Leafs had to retain some to make the cap work. It would give Leafs futures, and cap space and immediate help in three positions, actual two because Matthews would be gone.
PS Niemela stays a Leaf. My preference....Vilardi, Brandt, Iafello and first for Matthews. (maybe some retention to make it work.) Matthews would likely resign with the Kings.
