Projecting 2023-24

Created by: HockeyScotty
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 24, 2023
Published: May 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Maximize current window while also looking towards "post Big Three" future.

Aside from the Goalie Decision, getting better overall team defense (with two-way forward depth) is the most important.

I would take a run at Spencer Knight from Florida ($4.5 million AAV) if he is returning to NHL play next year as well due to Florida's cap hell and Bob's resurgence.

The Barbashev and Compher contracts look okay - although a little heavy on the term.

Not a fan at all of the Mayfield and Hill contracts. There are going to be some issues if Granlund and Carter are on the 3rd line imo

Those two cannot see the ice this season. New management needs to get those guys off the roster any way they can.

Agreed.

Carter is here unfortunately. You have a better chance of winning the lottery than him leaving. Granlund is an easy buyout candidate. The new GM has no ties to that trade so shouldn't feel compelled to keep him

I'm hoping with Hextall gone Carter sees the writing on the wall he won't be a regular and agrees to waive to go somewhere.

Are there any prospects ready to step into the top 9 next season?

Maybe a couple - but the pipeline is pretty weak. The good thing about the Pens is pretty much anybody can play with Malkin/Crosby and be half decent as long as the other winger is solid. We got a brief glimpse of Nylander this past season with Malkin(Zucker/Malkin/Nylander) and the line looked good - I would say he's ready to play top 9 if need be. Puustinen looked as good as Nylander in the AHL so I would say he's equally as ready. I would say that's probably it. Poulin might be ready at some point during the season.

Barbashev and Compher are good pickups. It's just that Carter was a black hole last year and Granlund didn't look much better on that 3rd line - having them together there worries me a bit. In my opinion one of them has to go - and Carter is nearly impossible to move.

This actually made me laugh out loud. Puustinen is probably the best bet because he is wildly talented, but he is a bit undersized and gets pushed around. O'Connor and Nylander should be regulars on the 4th line. They both have a pretty decent set of NHL level abilities, but neither have a good shot so their playing time will be limited.
