What I would do to the Coyotes as a non-Coyotes fan

Description
Another “What I would do” post. First and foremost remember I am a 3rd party observer and die-hard fans might disagree with what I say. What I would do to the Desert Dogs.

First off, I’m not going to get into whether or not I think the coyotes should relocate (personally I don’t want to see it). But I am going to say what I think they should do this off-season.

The goal of the Coyotes off-season, as it seems to have been the case over the last couple years, should be to maximize their cap flexibility to take on teams bad contracts while retaining future assets. I am also going to add a caveat, I’d like to build a semi-competitive roster. Not a team that will compete for the playoffs but maybe a team that will take a step from being a bottom 5 team to a bottom 10 team.

Question marks:

- What to do with Keller and Schmaltz? There have been a lot of rumours circulating the two dynamic forwards following the trade of Jacob Chychrun last season. After the arena deal rejection Keller and his agent met with the Coyotes front office to discuss their future and the direction of the team, and whether that future involved him.

- Other young players. What should the Maccelli extension look like? Does Guenther start the season in the teams top 6? What about the teams other FA’s? Who stays and who do we decide to let go. Also does the team seek to target potential reclamation projects in free agency?

- Who should we target as other teams potential cap dumps? Could we retain salary in three team trades? How do we leverage excess cap to obtain more picks/prospects?

Trades:

- The first trade I made is a trade back in the draft with Seattle. Trading down from 12th to 20th. The thought process behind this is that I want to gain more assets in the top 60 picks of the draft and a team picking in the back half of the first coming up. (It could be San Jose at 26 & 36 or Detroit/Anaheim/CHI). The point behind it is that maybe a team wants to trade up and select one of the two RDs or if one/both of the RDs are taken in the top 10 they trade up for a top 10 prospect. I chose Seattle because they cash in trading 20/52/57 for 12/72. I used a draft pick chart to estimate the value of this (mind you it's a strong class) but still the value heavily favours Seattle.

- Granlund/Rutta: From the moment Hextall signed Granlund to this extension we knew it would be something they would have to pay assets to get out from under. I really looked at the Kassian trade last year to determine value in this trade. Moving 3.2 mil for the Oilers cost 3 spots in the draft, a 2nd and a 3rd. In the Penguins clearing 7.75 million dollars the Penguins trade back 24 spots and toss in a future 4th. I really think this is a fair deal because the value of players is pretty even between 20-40 in the draft so in still getting a pick in that range the prospect value they are missing out on isn’t crazy large and they are clearing a lot of cap.

- Ceci for Rutta: After trading for Rutta AZ flips him to EDM (shutdown defensive Dman is exactly what they need) while retaining half the salary. I figure here the value of each Dman with no retention is a 4th somewhere. So they are even, with retention Rutta nets a 4th and prospect for being a player the Oilers need and clearing them 2 million of cap. Fischer lost a spot in AZ’s lineup in my opinion so his rights are flipped for a 5th. A condition is placed on the 4th making it a 3rd if the Oilers make the SCF.

- Ok now the big one, the three team trade. Let me say first, some delusional people view Boeser as a negative asset the Canucks can’t get anything of substantial value for, I don’t agree with this. While he is overpaid he is a good player. Also, Bailey is someone the Islanders will be looking to dump this off-season. Losing Eberle hurt their goal scoring, they need a top 6 winger capable of netting 20+, Boeser can do that. So the Canucks move back 3 spots in the draft while picking up the 49th pick in the draft for retaining 1 million of Boeser. Then AZ acquires a 1st for taking on Bailey’s contract, while flipping Boeser 50% retained to NY. NYI gets 2 more years of Boeser at 2.25mil netting them 2.75mil in cap. They get an upgrade and save money while shipping a 1st and 2nd out. I figured the price of dumping Bailey is a 1st while the cost of them getting Boeser retained like that is a 2nd (it's actually probably more than that but I think this is most fair). AZ for all this moves up from 14 to 11 and gains a first next year. I think this is a win-win-win for all parties involved.

DRAFT:

#6 - Zach Benson LW - (Undersized elite playmaking goal-scoring forward. Not exactly a system need given abundance of this skill set but can’t pass up this prospect)
#11 - Ryan Leonard RW - (Bit of a bigger, two-way, 200 ft player who does the dirty work)
#20 - Dmitriy Simashev LD (6’4” Defensive minded Physical Dman)
#52 - Carson Bjarnason G (Big frame, 6’3”)
#57 - Caden Price LD (Smart, fast, defensively reliable two-way Dman)
#70 - Kalan Lind C (Gritty, does the dirty work, physical “pest”)
#81 - Felix Nilsson C (Two-way, playmaking centre)
#88 - Daniil Karpovich LD (Great build, good skater, two-way defenseman)
#102 - Jakub Stancl LW (Big physical power forward with soft hands)
#134 - Benjamin Poitras C (Playmaking right shot centre, Northeastern commit)
#152 - Carter Sotheran RD (Physical defensive defenseman)
#159 - Timur Mukhanov C (Elite playmaking centre, really undersized)
#162 - Sam Court RD (Offensive minded right shot, AJHL)
#166 - Milton Oscarson LW (6’6” Big physical power forward)

RFA’s:

- I really struggled with Maccelli’s extension. The Yotes have been known in the past to give big extensions to young players hoping that they live up to them and past them, making them value deals (Keller/Chychrun). So I did the same with Maccelli signing him to a 8x5.25 mil. Might be a slight overpay now but if he plays like he did this season, or better, it's a value deal.

- McBain/Jenik: I both want them to get a full couple seasons of centreing their own lines to really see what AZ has, so I signed them to bridge deals for now.
Ingram: Solid add of waivers last year I figured he’s earned an extension as AZ has a clear lack of goalie depth/prospects and are unlikely to sign anyone in FA.

UFA’s:

- Juulsen: Former 1st round pick simply adds depth to the AHL pool as it was lacking on the right side, bit of a reclamation project.

- Benson: Former 32nd overall pick, likely won’t amount to a career in the NHL but signing him to a two year deal likely means he will play one year in the AHL with his brother.

- Buyout Kassian making him a FA. 2 points in 50 games. Not a player you want/need.

Note: Cooley is spending another year in University, and I'd like Geekie to get at least half a year in the WHL/AHL before he is called up (similar to Guenther).

Let me know what you think and what you’d change.

Pens are better off buying out Granlund and moving Rutta for a low pick of even FC.

Pens laugh and decline. And Hextall didn’t sign Granlund to any extension, lol.

Pens buyout would cost them under a mil next year and but then almost 2 mil a year for the next 3 years after that. I’d rather trade back 20ish spots and clear the full 7.75 mil. Like let’s assume at 14 they get Danielson/Stenberg and at 37 they get Stramel/OFM/Ziemmer/etc. that seems pretty good to me. You have to ask yourself is getting Danielson and having 2 mil of dead cap worth more than who they get at 37 and 8mil in cap space? I’d do it for sure. The difference in 20-40 of the draft is marginal it’s so deep.

Rutta value is hard. A competent GM would see the bind Pens are in and not give value up for him without retention.

I like the move for them and think it’s fair. But if you’re a Pens fan and think it’s too much then I respect that.

    Hi!

This seems like the exact move the Canucks are trying to make. I’ve seen a lot of their media talking Boeser and 11 for 19 & 35 with Chicago. I thought the one I proposed of 14 & 49 was better than that.

If it’s about the retention (fair) I figured they do it considering the cap is increasing by a million anyways so that’s free money.

They could always trade back from 14 to 19 and pick up 51/55 if they wanted to. Then they are getting 19/47/55 which seems to be the Canucks goal heading into this draft (gain as much draft capital as they can).

Personally from the Canucks point of view I might be more tempted to hang onto Boeser. Like I said in the description I really like him and he had a great end to the season last year. He finished at 0.78 ppg. Essentially trading that player for a 2nd round pick, idk if I’d do that. But you also gotta understand that even at 0.78 ppg he is overpaid on his current deal.

But if we’re talking the trade I proposed I think it benefits the Canucks the most, then NYI, then AZ.

    Did he say that recently?

I know his Dad tweeted that out then said he got hacked after it went a little viral lol

Still with 5 years left on his deal, and coming off a career year, I’d be in no rush to move him this off-season.

1st and 2nd and Bailey for Boeser at 2x2.3. I don't think it's crazy to think NYI would be all over that... saving draft capital isn't their mo really. Look at the Horvat deal last year.

I don't want or like Boeser at all. I'm not trading any more 1st rounders period.
