Description
It’s 3 moves. I’m not positive how I feel about them and I’m not positive about the additional pieces in the trades but I think this would give the Leafs a new look and make things interesting.

The first trade, the Rangers need to get rid of Goodrow and I think the Leafs actually want a player like that. If the Rangers take Murray, they can buy him out for almost nothing. That might be one of the cheapest ways they can get out of Goodrow and the Leafs could use a capable gritty offensive player in their bottom 6.

Brodie and Nylander for Wheeler and Hanifin is the basis of my other 2 trades. I think Hanifin is a big upgrade on Brodie and gives them another top 4 D with Brodie declining and expiring. Wheeler does basically everything Tavares doesn’t and will compliment his game. Plus can take some of the load off by playing some center.

3 young guys as the top 3 LW is probably a risk but it’s cheap and has upside. I will also bring in multiple veterans on PTOs, guys who might slip through free agency like Sheary, Drouin, Heinen, Blueger, Craig Smith, Connor Brown, Donskoi if he attempts a comeback, maybe Ryan Dzingel? Or possibly guys coming back from Europe/Russia like Bracco or Goldobin or someone like that. Low cost to no cost guys who will at least push the kids on the left side.

Calgary can't afford that and I doubt Pelletier is available

Yeah, Rangers pass. If they do any buying out, it will be Goodrow where they get his full cap hit + in years 1 and 2 of the buy out helping their immediate cap needs.

If the Leafs want a player like Goodrow they can probably sign Nick Foligno for near league minimum.

You should look at the buyout numbers on goodrow. They're actually better than Murray's. Goodrow's contract is designed to be bought out this off season.

there's still almost 10 million worth of cap hits over the next 8 years despite this year and next being positive cap hits. You're probably right though, if anything, I bet the Rangers could get someone else to take Goodrow and buy him out with the way that its structured.

And this is the last year the cap remains flat. Likely what happens is if the rangers buy him out, his buyout number after the next 2 years is washed out by the cap jumps.
