Description
Well, one has to think Lou will be adding offense.

What Bertuzzi goes for has me guessing. But historically more a 50 point winger, amd not many comparable out there to gauge. Maybe Anderson?, but that contract is a bit older. I would think the $5.5 million with term is ballpark. If he is wanting more, I pivot to a Barbashev, who I think sees slightly less.

Resigned Engvall who seemed to fit in to the Islander style very well.

As a result of these two signings, Holmstrom is sent to Bridgeport for further seasoning. He has the offensive game 100%, but it was not very evident last season. Getting significant ice time in the AHL should help him tremendously.

Only change on the blueline is Bolduc - who replaces Mayfield. I cannot imagine him not making this team at this point. His small sample size last year he looked good, and his play in Bridgenorth was great.

The Islander goaltending with Sorokin is in better than fantastic shape. Brought back Varlamov on a 1 year deal, which for the amount he played and his age seems pretty bang on. However, there aren't a lot of tenders on the UFA market, so some may find the money a little light. More a hometown discount signing that one hopes Varlamov goes for.

Overall: if the team can stay healthy is should score. We know it can defend. Certainly the desire is real to get this core looking younger, but not using draft capital that.

I wouldn’t buy out Bailey. I think he is worth it for one year as a veteran mentor who can contribute 30-40 points in the right situation. He would be great in SJ to mentor guys like Robins, Bordeleau and Eklund and take some pressure off Logan and Tommy.

    Honestly, I agree with you.

The issue here is the $5 million, which Bailey just isn't worth any longer. So does a young team pick up Bailey at the full hit for the purpose you describe? That is a debate. And even then, the consensus is either the Isles retain (which I don't think they can do if they want to move the needle), or they are moving asset to move the contract.

    It's a conundrum.

But the reality is, Bailey remains a very serviceable 3rd line option. The cap hit is killer.

If I am Mike Grier i pick up Bailey for a 2023 2nd in a heartbeat. Throw him on the 2nd line with Couture and Peterson. Nothing to lose in another non competitive season in SJ. Sturm has already embraced the mentor role in SJ and if Bailey is willing to as well its a win. Can retain half and move him at the TDL for another pick even. Sturm mentors Robins and Zetterlund in the bottom six while Bailey helps with Eklund, Bords and Peterson.

Certainly an option. Semantics really when speaking about an extra forward.

I think there are a few teams that could benefit from Bailey. Sharks, Yotes, Wings..... I just don't see them moving draft capital to do it.

I am working from the CF consensus here that Bailey is more a buyout candidate than a commodity that can he dealt.

Hell, as a Leafs fan I would take Bailey at $2.5 million to play on the 3rd line. The guy is maligned because of the contract, but the ability to play is certainly there still.

Yeah I hate when decent players face this scenario due to their contracts. Its a reality in a cap world. Sharks have a logjam at LD and would love to move Simek for Bailey. I wonder if NYI would accept such a proposal.

Good question..... frankly I am ok with Aho and Bolduc on the bottom pairing.

Ideally, moving Bailey for a decent prospect who has some potential is likely the direction if a deal were.to be made. Maybe Kaut? Strong likelihood he clear waivers, and the Isles do need to organizational depth on the wing

The team taking Bailey is going to require a sweetener to get the deal done. Isles would have to send something like a 2nd or 3rd.

I don’t know if Kaut plays into the future in SJ, he did look good but was never called up permanently. But Kaut is a reasonable ask. More than anything the sharks need to shrink the LD logjam.

Well, in the Chicago deal, the 2nd was moved. So you are right there. Trying to get back a small asset could work.....

Bailey + 2nd is a yes for Chicago. We wouldn't buy him out. This is the kind of cap dump move the hawks will be looking to make.
