Description
Does Minnesota like this deal?

Not a lot of options out there for Montreal to help with LD and/or C, but Minnesota has at least a temporary solution for both. They should have struck while the uncertainty of expansion was still a concern for teams. Now some players who may have been available at a discount, aren't going to be available at all.

Gallagher and Byron are players any team could use. Not sure a 3rd is enough, as I might have an inflated value for these players, but the pick could be upped to a 2nd and a prospect could be added if necessary.

Shaw or McCarron would have to step up their game to fill Gallagher's shoes, and Hudon should be able to replace Byron (though he won't match his speed).

Staal serves as a stop-gap for center and helps Montreal compete while Price's and Pacioretty's new contracts are pending and Markov/Plekanec are still on the roster. Danault isn't ideal on the 1st line, but we'd have to move Plekanec to get the cap space to trade for another top 6 center. I don't see that happening this season, unless it's at the deadline and we spend our extra 2nd in 2018 for a rental.

No interest from the Wild. Staal is pretty unreplaceable for the Wild. They don't have a 1/2C waiting in the wings for next season. Gally is a nice player, but not really a good fit anywhere in the lineup.

Hmm...

I thought they would have Granlund/Koivu as their 1-2. No? (I don't follow the Wild too closely)
It's true they aren't in particular need of wingers, but perhaps some lateral moves and/or upgrades to make them a little more dynamic up front.
Byron's a good fit with his all around game, but adds speed as a (not so secret) weapon.
Gallagher is a strong net-front presence. No matter who is in that role on Columbus, Gallagher is probably better at it, so they become expendable.

I take it you don't like the idea of trading Gallagher and/or acquiring Staal. Like I said though, options are limited and Bergevin is under pressure.

Granlund was moved to wing and just had a huge season. He's not a very good center, low end 2C at best.

Not much room for upgrade of the wings unless it's an elite player. Even Pominville had 47p as the worst of the top-9 wings, and he was a 3rd liner without PP time, his contract is just something the Wild can't afford. The prospect pool for wings is also well stocked.

Center and RD are the weak spots in the Wild prospect pools. Not really a position of strength for MTL to be trading assets.

Gotcha. I'll have to look for a better fit then. Thanks for the insights. smile
