Sharks need another year of tank

Created by: jsteed02
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2023
Published: Jun. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A good tanking team should have a good power play and top line, and NOTHING else
Limit of 3 retained salaries at a time is an issue since they have Burns already and EK65 will have to be retained. But we have seen third party teams take on contracts to facilitate trades so it’s not a huge problem.
Kane is trade bait. I can’t see him getting huge money at 34, injured, and with a pretty bad season for the Hawks and Rangers. Put him on PP1, let him completely ignore defence and just jack up his points to get a deadline haul if possible. Same goes for Klingberg, like Anaheim did last year. A bunch of money and living in the Bay Area for a year, and potentially being traded to a contender should be convincing enough for them
List of potential trade bait:
- Kane
- Lindblom
- Barabanov
- Lebanc
- Murray
- Campbell
- Yamamoto
- Klingberg
Long shots
- Vlasic
- Ceci
- Couture

  1. Bourgault, Xavier
  2. Broberg, Philip
  3. Campbell, Jack
  4. Ceci, Cody
  5. Petrov, Matvei
  6. Yamamoto, Kailer
  7. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
  8. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
  9. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
  10. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
I know they were in the running at the deadline and after another playoff failure, I can see management wanting to make a big move, even if imo it’s the wrong one to make. Yamo and Campbell are cap dumps to make EK fit (slots into Ceci’s spot), I think Campbell is too boom-bust for a contending Oilers team and Skinner looks like he’s their guy. I want to emphasize that I don’t think this is the right move for EDM, but that I think it’s a move their management would make
EDM
  1. Karlsson, Erik ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Priority #1, in my opinion, is selling high on Karlsson now. He’s going to win the Norris, and with his age and injury history it’s not likely he puts up numbers worthy of his contract again. Get assets now.
2.
SJS
  1. Murray, Matt
  2. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
TOR
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Move up in the draft to take on Murray, he may just spend the whole year on LTIR, but if not, he has the potential to be a minor asset at the deadline. It’s not like the sharks should be aiming for good goaltending anyway
3.
SJS
  1. 2023 5th round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
No backup, they might trade Hellebuyck anyway

Patrick Kane isn't wasting his career on a cellar dweller like San Jose. And after resurfacing hip surgery. He won't even be available until at least January. No team is signing him probably until at least December.

If Murray were to spend the whole year on LTIR there’s no real reason the leafs would move him

If you lower the price to a 5th or 6th rounder... I'd love to have Evgeny

“Wasting his career” is a weird way to describe 7 million dollars and a one year contract

Sure, but the Leafs don’t know that and he’s both the odd one out of their trio and the most expensive

Yeah, makes total sense, a reasonable price

Yall leaving Couture and Hertl in there to lose more value and increase the wins?

He is wasting his career, he's said numerous times that he wants another cup. Not happening in San Jose any time soon.

Each team can only have three salaries retained at a time. Hertl was just extended and considered untouchable at the trade deadline, so ACGMing him away doesn’t make sense. I don’t see a fit for Couture this off-season at an 8M cap hit. I think it makes more sense to use Hertl and Couture to pump the points of their more realistic trade assets, and if Couture can find a suitor at the deadline, go for it. If not, try again next year and the year after, it may be easier as an expiring UFA to get a prospect back

Agreed we don’t know that, just commenting on your additional info on the trade

It’s a one year contract, and the entire point is to trade him to a contending team at the deadline anyway.
