Burnt Ground Not Scorched Earth

Created by: BeautifulIdiot
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 15, 2023
Published: Jun. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Draft Willander, Danielson, Dragicevic with the first few picks.

You want to convince Petey to stay? Give him reasons to. VGK had $0 committed to their cap 6 years ago, now they won the cup, if we want to get there we have to be ruthless and start sending guys out the door, we have our bona fide #1 C in Petey, a number of wingers, a #1 and #2 defencemen, and a #1 Goalie. What we need now is depth, from the middle outwards. We have Arty who will be our goalie of the future, we have some defence prospects but no one who looks to be high end, and then we have some bottom 6 hopeful wingers. We need high end defenders and High end centres, that might look like packaging a few prospects together to get a better one, but we need to start working our way up by taking a sizeable step back.

There is no better centre available for this UFA class, and if he were to make it to market, a 80-90pt centre who can play both ends usually gets paid more, even for the age. He for sure is beating the kadri comp and he’s younger. If a team feels as tho he would bring them over the edge and see it as “eventually someone else’s problem” I could see a deal of the sort being made. Especially a new management group in Pitt, wanting to move out very bad cap and get better instantly, add some toughness and heft to the lineup too

So you go from 11 to 15 just to add a late 2nd round pick? doesnt seem worth it theres gonna be really good prospects available at 11

Yep, it does, but will this team win now, or will it win when it gets torn down to the studs, all the long contracts are gone and all the shorter deals and younger guys are still here. We could use those 1sts to get better in the long run

46/47 are the 14th and 15th picks, we are also moving up in the 3rd round. It is contingent on who is available. If mitchkov and benson and reinbacher are there, we’re making the pick, but if the quality isn’t there and we can afford to wait, then we would be better served waiting and picking up more picks

Team is toast in the long run if EP leaves no matter how many draft picks. One line teams get cooked in the nhl, Miller is irreplaceable

Miller is one of their best players, so dealing him probably doesn't make the team better, so not sure how that is going to help keep Pettersen around. Monahan's health can't really be relied upon, they need a better solution there, maybe ROR or make a move for Scheifele or Lindholm.

I expect fans from other fanbases to underrate Miller, but Canucks fans do it way too often too. We were only trading one of Miller or Horvat, not both and that decision has been made.

Irreplaceable is quite the stretch, getting a stop gap could help the team not be absolutely terrible, but we can’t get too attached to players, especially those who don’t fit our window

Yes he is one of our best players, but I think more drastic moves are needed to push this team forward. Currently working on a next version of this

I don’t think the decision has been made, otherwise patty would have said so, he didn’t, he said that we would listen, that doesn’t sound like a guy who he sees as immovable

Miller is immoveable the same way Zibanejad is immoveable, nobody would meet the acquisition cost because their teams want to keep them.

I don't think having 4 mid 1sts in the next two drafts will help us win much with our Pettersson-Hughes-Demko core unless you plan on using them to acquire players like the Hronek deal.

I can see why management/ownership believes this team is closer to competing than others and that's only possible with Miller. He only get's moved if a strong 2C replacement is lined up and Monahan does not fit the bill.

I would have to agree with @Canuck33, you haven't made a big enough move here to justify shipping out Miller (which is easier said than done). Rutherford & Allvin might be looking to move Miller, but ultimately probably don't find him a new home unless they can pull a blockbuster deal with the Rangers.

See I would disagree, teams would pay this much in FA, we see this with a player who wasn’t as good and was older in Kadri, yes he just came off winning a cup but miller had put up better numbers over the years. Miller would probably get 8x7 in FA, so now is there a team that would trade for him, and might send back cap? I think so

Don't think he's available, JBB knew what he was doing when he signed him and Cernak to those long-term deals, they want them around. I would consider him untouchable.

You're analysis is reasonable but it only looks at the contract cost, not the trade cost. Vancouver would need significant assets back in a Miller trade, the kind that other teams don't give up. We were holding out for Schneider from the Rangers but the ask was never met. If Miller was a UFA this summer he'd get a massive deal given the weak UFA crop, but he's not so that line of thinking doesn't work.

If you are dead set on a Miller trade it must satisfy all of these requirements:

- Acquiring team must be willing to take an expensive, long term contract commitment to win now.
- Acquiring team must have asset(s) that the Canucks find valuable AND be willing to give them up.
- Acquiring team must have cap flexibility in terms of current cap space or contracts that can be included to balance the deal.
- Acquiring team must deem Miller a better target than others (Scheifele, Kuznetsov, etc.) due to caliber of play, playstyle fit, acquisition cost, locker room chemistry, etc.
- Vancouver must have a strong option to replace Miller at 2C, either with the trade itself or immediately following the trade using the assets.
- Unless the deal is made in the next couple of weeks, the acquiring team must be one that Miller would waive for given his NMC.

Unless something as bonkers as the Tkachuk trade happens, there's no path for a Miller trade.
