I would think San Jose can get a better offer than that. I also don't know if Karlsson will want to go back to Canada to play. But he did say a contender and Toronto would be a good fit in the lineup.

No and they shouldn’t try.

The recency bias is HUGE here, he makes over $11M, and the Sharks are trading him at his all-time high, essentially. At 50%, it’s still not a great situation, and the cost would be even higher. This move has “regret” written all over it.

You think Leafs are offering too much or not enough?

Yea I honestly wasn't really sure how much to offer. That contract is huge so very tough to gauge. Feel it's fair but they could get more IMO. Would be a very interesting fit for sure.

It's absolutely a risk, but is it the risk needed to bring a Cup to Toronto?

Better question is why would leafs get karlson? Acquisition cost, aav (even with retention), term, risk all scream no thank you

Even if this trade goes thru, you no longer have enough salary to sign both Matthews and Nylander next summer, Only way you trade for karlsson is to send Tavares or nylander back the other way.

It's a risk, no denying that. Is he what Toronto needs to make the jump though?

Well that's obviously a huge factor as well. How much do they want? If they sign for 2-3 mill combined more than their current contract, you can do it. Will O'Reilly take slightly less than 5? What does Samsonov want? Lots of questions but you could make it work.

Who knows? But I would prefer we take a path with less risk and less loss of assets.

Can't wait forever, that's the issue. There are alternate routes, but this is the one that improves them this year the most.

Not an uneccesary one like this one: Karlsson would need to be PP1 and get most of the minutes to produce near the level that he produced in SJ, which would affect Rielly/McCabe/Lilly etc.

Karlsson takes PP1, Rielly PP2. Rielly/Schenn take on the hard minutes, Karlsson takes advantage of the easier matchups.

So, then how are you extending Matthews/Nylander/Sammy? What about depth? Everything that Karlson does, Rielly does better with more defence and heart, so why don't the Leafs get something the they don't have? Like a Trouba/Zadorov/Big, mobile defensemen to creat the second coming of the bash brothers with Schenn?

Not enough. $12 mil retention, taking back $5 mil (doubt he accepts a trade to San Jose), Niemela took a step back this year and that’s a late pick

As you can see Sammy is already signed this offseason. Before making a trade like this you'd already need to extend Nylander and Matthews to ensure there's room in the future. Karlsson is better than Rielly, let's not even go there.

ignore the other quote, accidental. It's tough to gauge what San Jose can get back for him. 5 mill back isn't really a big deal, you need to hit cap floor anyway and he's only signed one more season. Niemela is still a solid prospect regardless. High end B prospect imo, not an A though.

So, no depth? Also, Rielly is twice the player Karlson is right now

Sharks have no issues with hitting the cap floor with all their large contracts
