I think it is too much for Pesce, unless signed long term at a decent AAV.
Liljegren is going to be very important for the Leafs, and you're proposing (quite literally) 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd for a UFA. Why not just roll the dice and see if he's available next year for free, or offer a more reasonable package.

Can Leafs Get Karlsson
No and they shouldn’t try.
The recency bias is HUGE here, he makes over $11M, and the Sharks are trading him at his all-time high, essentially. At 50%, it’s still not a great situation, and the cost would be even higher. This move has “regret” written all over it.

They're probably more likely to pay someone a draft pick or prospect to have THEM buy him out - might be a tough sell as the true $ cost is about $5.6M. The Leafs had to pay a 1st Rd pick to Carolina for the Marleau buyout, but that being 35+ changes it a bit.

Trust me - Timo is sick, there's no doubt there. I just think the issue is, does Knies for 3 years give the Leafs more valuable help than Timo would for 1 playoff run (through the hardest division in hockey). You'd love to think he could stick around beyond this year, but how on earth would they pull it off without losing one of the Core-4.

How to Timo Your Dragon
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChadLucifer</b></div><div>Leafs overrating Topi. Guy’s a 5/6 d man I’m sorry. Undersized puck moving fins don’t exactly move the needle. Maybe he becomes a 4 in the right system but in reality he’s just another clone of Sandin/Lil. The only way San Jose makes a deal is if Knies and a 1st are on the table. Everyone knows that</div></div>
He's just a clone of two defenders that are currently both 23-or-under playing 20+ mins per night on a top-4 team in the LEAGUE. The guy's 20 years old, to call him a 5-6 isn't offensive, it's just wrong lol
Here's the list of IIHF Best Defenseman of the WJ of the past 15years:
David Jiricek
Kasper Puutio
Topi Niemela
Rasmus Sandin (worth a 1st rounder if not more)
Alexander Romanov (just traded for a 13th OA pick)
Rasmus Dahlin (went 1st OA)
Thomas Chabot
Zach Werenski
Vladislav Gavrikov
Rasmus Ristolainen
Jacob Trouba
Brandon Gormley
Ryan Ellis
Alex Pietrangelo
Erik Karlsson
Drew Doughty
So, on the low-end, he's a Gormley, which stinks. That being said, history would point to him bottoming-out as a 3-5. You can be wrong, but don't be silly.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DoBap</b></div><div>How about Knies, Robertson, and a first?
Robertson just acts as the sweetener, if he comes back next season ready to go, he'll be ready to slot in on the Sharks Top 6.</div></div>
I doubt the Leafs would do that - they'd probably give up 2 1sts and Robertson and throw in another pick as sweetener. I don't think the Leafs are moving Knies for Timo.

Kerfoot is probably a flip for the Sharks - so what, 3rd rounder?
Niemela is a quality prospect, you'd be foolish to say otherwise. This trade equals 2 1sts and a 2nd at the moment, plus Kerfoot. It's a bit short of what Meier will end up going for, but it's in the ballpark.

-I would think the Sharks hold out for more. If you believe that the Devils are dangling Alex Holtz as the centerpiece of a deal, I think this would easily get beat - Robertson is a big question mark at this point, and while Niemela is a solid prospect, I just don't think he's quite at Holtz's level.</div></div>
Probably add a 4th in 2025 and that would get it done, you'd have to think, right?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>Not crazy about trading for Robertson until we see how he is post-injury, but if this is the best offer on the table I think the Sharks would take it.</div></div>

I get homer-ism but holy cow this is brutal.
Any team buying high (read: insanely, way over-hyped, high), is going to regret the over-pay needed. Plus, it looks like the Canucks are going to clear some cap to re-sign him.

Leafs probably would do this but likely wouldn’t take a contract back. Getting a 3rd and Kerf off the contract count is probably what they want.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingLundqvist30</b></div><div>Why trade for a young guy just to bury him on the 4th line?</div></div>
I'd ditch the Milano signing for that reason - move Hayton to 2LW and run Engvall, Kampf, Jarnkrok as 3rd line and Aube-Kubel, Steeves, and some combination of Anderson/Robertson/etc, to fill out the roster. A $1.8M Milano isn't what the Leafs need.

Trade is interesting, but the Leafs won't/can't run a 21 man roster and this roster is weaker as constructed. I think if Dubas gambles, he gambles once and not twice (either Milano or the Hayton deal, likely not both).
Hard to imagine Gio-Lilly on the second pairing - why tie up nearly $8M on the bottom pairing?

All of these trades are scary bad (except MAYBE the Van trade).
You NEED a 1st back if you trade Nylander, and especially to the Kraken (they suck, FYI). Not to mention, Bjorkstrand is a downgrade.
Chychrun should not and will not cost that much. Come back and roast me if I am wrong, feel free.

Miller for Niemela
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mv21227</b></div><div>It is a very solid return, I could just see the Canucks trying to get a bit more though</div></div>
They won't get more.
You're getting a VERY high end RHD prospect, which Vancouver fans lament the lack of. You also get a 2023 1RD, 2023 3rd (that MORE than covers Miller's value). Kerfoot is to make salary work and with Abruzzese, that covers retention.
That being said, I don't think a Miller trade is worth it for the Leafs at this point. He's too expensive and the risk is way too high for a rental. This is a trade that should have been done last deadline.

Miller
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>QualityTrades1</b></div><div>Obviously I want to yell at you for putting Miller in 3C but you told me I can't so I won't.
I like the trade. Top prospect, 1st round pick (though I believe it should be unprotected but whatever), another quality prospect and a couple position / cap exchanges.
My only concern is Sandin signing for only 1.25M. Don't you think it would have already been a done-deal if he was willing to sign for that much?
Either way the Leafs are fine since you can slot Muzzin on the left with Schenn on the right and sign / bring up a depth guy.
quick side note:
Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Miller - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Robertson - Gaudette - Aube-Kubel
Right?</div></div>
I think Sandin's biggest issue is diminished role - bringing in Schenn and sending out Holl largely doesn't change much of that, other than Schenn makes half what Holl makes.
Sandin wants regular 3rd pairing with sniffs of second pairing. As currently constructed, he has Giordano, Muzzin and Rielly ahead of him on the left and Brodie, Holl, Liljegren on the right. Moving out Holl bumps him up one spot and keeping Schenn as your #7 is functional.
I think this is a Miller trade that gets done, but man is it ever expensive.
