Can someone walk me through this Monahan thing?
Why?
I get obtaining assets, but who is Montreal moving out to accommodate a guy who can barely skate at this point over $6M to play on the third line? He's not an asset that can be flipped, unless someone has to hit the floor, but then why wouldn't Calgary just broker that deal directly?

Promoting From Within
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kjell_Forsman</b></div><div>Kerfoot is a good player but Trenin is younger and broke out with 17 goals last year a pace that he could easily break next season. He plays with more passion and physicality which is far more valuable than Kerfoots playoff abilities</div></div>
Trenin shot 12.5% last year, which is incredibly unsustainable for a player of his ilk. He'll probably be a 15-20 goal guy MAX and that's with a huge bump in playing time on a contending team with high-end linemates.
Don't conflate physicality with impact, this isn't 1993.

Nobody asked, but:
Barzal > Pettersson (at this EXACT moment in time)
Hughes >>>>>>>>>>> Dobson
Sorokin >/= Demko
So I guess the Canucks say no but only because of Hughes.

Leafs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>I'm admittedly confused, Kerfoot had a career year and 51 points, in January he was top three on the team in 5v5 goals. What did he do to piss off Leaf fans so badly that 1/4 of all leafs AGM's I see trying to offload Kerfoot on Anaheim.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>It's purely a mathematical thing, because trading him is the one move that makes them cap-compliant (as trading Justing Holl, for example, doesn't). It's just like trading Jake Muzzin, who's worth a lot more to them than he is to any of the teams that can afford his cap hit, yet most Leafs fans don't fully understand it -- either they think that he won't be missed, or else they think that the non-contender team taking him on should pay a high price for him because he should be as valuable to the also-ran as he is to the Leafs.</div></div>
He's a player with value to anybody league-wide but is too good to be on the 3rd line and too expensive to keep considering the other moves the Leafs have to make.
It really looks like they're going to have to move someone, and I think Holl won't be a Leaf, and perhaps Sandin, too. The only other move/combo of moves left is Holl and Engvall, but I really doubt they signed Engvall to move him, and then they are still allowing Kerfoot to walk at the end of the season.

A competent 22-23 Ducks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>I agree completely with your analysis. Many of your Maple Leaf colleagues simply look at that cap hit and think that all of Toronto's problems will be solved if it's disappeared. I've said in many posts that I think that trading Muzzin would be a mistake because you have no one to replace him internally and I don't think that either Sandin or Giordano can do so for the whole season and then the playoffs, and what's left on the free agent market sure isn't appealing. (DeHaan? DeKeyser? Naaah.)</div></div>
Some logic here, which is nice!
I doubt the Leafs do anything about Muzzin at all. I think that Sandin could stand as a 2nd pairing guy, but $5.625M in cap space isn't super useful when you have to spend assets to replace it. If someone wanted Muzzin and was offering value back, I could see it.

A competent 22-23 Ducks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Toronto needs to shed cap and we don't need to take it unless we have an incentive to do so. The Toronto guys have finally gotten around to offering us a second with him in exchange for Future Considerations -- don't get them all excited.</div></div>
That would be criminally low - gifting a 2nd with a player who is already better than almost any player on your blueline at the moment is silly. Comparisons to other cap dumps need not apply - the Leafs aren't THAT pressed to move him, but would benefit more from moving him than a lot of other cap dumps we have seen this summer.
Muzzin gets a 3rd back NO PROBLEM. That being said, he probably won't waive to dwell in the bottom of the Pacific, nor will he really waive at all. I think the more apt comment would be that Leafs fans have finally realized that if Muzzin moves, it's next summer.

Strome at that AAV is possible, but it'll be a "bet on himself" deal and be 1 year at the most for such little money.
Doubt that Milano, Comrie and E-Rod even entertain these offers.

Great satire
He's a rental and will be valued as such. A first round pick and an RFA 22 year old defenceman who could play in your top 4, when you only have Oesterle signed to LD... yeah it's a good trade. The Leafs would not take this trade as-is, give it up.

Malkin doesn't sign that. Not even close.
Not sure if Dubas was drinking and Dorion caught a shirtless snap of him and he has some embarrassing tattoo, but Kerfoot > Brown, and you add a 3rd? The trade would be more like Holl and a 3rd for Murray and Brown - Murray @ 50% minimum, and Brown probably at 50% too.

Except for the fact that they don’t because it’s public that Talbot isn’t too pumped about the situation. One team with a sad goalie and a team that needs a goalie.
