Absolutely agree but the roster still needs improvement. When you have a deep enough team, you leave a lot less up to chance, see the last two cup winners (I realized Vegas was way over the cap). Leafs need another top 4 defenseman, ideally a 2C (or top 6 winger) and better scoring depth. This can be achieved without moving any of the big guys but would certainly make it easier

I agree for sure it needs improvement. I think they have the room to do that without moving one of those guys. i just think its too hard to move one of those guys and win the trade

Capable of playing the position and being a 1C are different things. You aren't winning a cup with him as your 1C unless you are absolutely stacked at wing

That is an inaccurate statement, sign and trades also happen in a scenario like this where the player has a year remaining on their deal and to add incentive, the team signs the player prior to trading or the receiving team has had discussions with the agent and know a deal is likely - Calgary fans should know this, see Matthew Tkachuk

There is 3 sign and trades in NHL history
1. Marian Hossa signed by Ottawa an rhen immediately traded for Danny Heatley. Hossa was not aware he was getting traded when he signed that contract
2. The aforementioned restricted free agent Matthew Tkachuk signed by Calgary and immediately traded to Florida
3. Soon to be unrestricted free agent Damon Severson signed an 8 year extension with New Jersey and then immediately traded to Columbus

We may have a couple more sign and trades take place this year such as Alex DeBrincat and Pierre-Luc Dubois. Maybe even Ryan Graves. But absolutely not see a sign and trade involving Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin, William Nylander, Jake Guentzel, Mark Scheifele, etc

Why not? Carolina and Dallas just went to the semifinals with Aho and Hintz as their 1C's. St. Louis won it woth Ryan O'Reilly.
