Not just to have assets down the road, but also because there are limits to how many players a team may own the rights to, how many contracts teams can have total, and how many players can be on the NHL roster, at any given time. They need to make sure we aren't going to have players all coming up at the same time and due new contracts all at the same time. CHI also needs quality over quantity, which consolidating doesn't guarantee anything, but it increases the odds of bringing real future NHLer's into the pipeline.
