How does trading Marner for a "good young, player" and Ryan Graves make us a better team?

For fit... Does Marner do really good things? Yes. Can that young player do 85% of what Marner does for 50% of the price? Yes... Again, there's also more room to get other players (roughly 4 mill in cap space) and you'll get more than that young player

Does this mythical ‘good young player’ get to the arena on a unicorn? I have no idea who you could possibly mean? Necas might be able to get to 85% of Marner’s offensive production one day but he’s nowhere near on the defensive side; plus he’s due a major raise in a year. Fantilli is not available - why would a bottom team trade him for Marner? Lindholm is older than Marner 😂, and not as good - offense or defense.

There is no team that would trade for Marner that has enough cap, without getting rld of cap themselves.

It's more of a placeholder... For this year... I'd rather Necas at 3 than Marner at 10.9 just because that's 60-65% of the total player for 30% of the cost. Pro. should have said Carlsson but you get what I mean and again, for this year and prob. the years after, Lindholm will be cheaper than Marner by at least 2 mill. for 80-85% of the player Marner is... As we've seen with every sports team (NHL included), it's about the best 23 man team, not the best 5 man team

That's why I put the cap hit at 5.5 and left about 4 mill left in cap space

Why do Toronto fans prefer to trade Marner? Matthews will leave in a year and those that believe he truly wants to play in Toronto are delusional. Just watch what he does. Marner is a better player anyway and is an Ontario boy that wants to play there. If Toronto doesn’t trade Matthews before July 1st they will regret it.

Why do other fanbases prefer Marner over Matthews despite Matthews being a better player. Friedman has heard that Matthews should sign around 3-5 years. But just watch what Draisaitl does, I'm sure he's leaving Edmonton in 2 years.

First, Toronto is the most popular team in the league. Not unusual - especially given lack of playoff success - to have a wide variety of opinions on how to move forward. Some Leaf fans want to move Marner, but lots (like me) think it would be ridiculous to move him.
And who knows - but I’m very confident Matthews will be extending here. This is (one of) the premier franchises in the league & centre of the hockey universe; the lights shine brightest in Toronto on a Saturday night

The issue is you keep mentioning this cap space that can be used to acquire some player(s) that will perform to the contracts they are paid, no matter what. Players like Necas are paid less because they aren't as good. I'm not sure how hard that is to understand. I mean, you clearly do undestand since you said it. So I'm not sure what your point is. You can literally say that about any player ever. Should the Oilers trade Hyman for Kerfoot because he produces 50% while making 50% less?

The bottom line is no team trades a 100 point selke-level winger and becomes better. And not that this matters, but suggesting that acquiring Elias Lindholm, a player that's on the verge of getting overpaid and is objectively worse than Marner in every facet of hockey, will make this team better because he costs ~3 million less is honestly revolting. Not sure how you can even call yourself a Leaf fan.

Read the description where it says says that prospects and picks would be added... So, it's a downgrade on Marner but an upgrade on Jarnkrok (for example).

I prefer to have a more well rounded team so I don't have to rely on 4 players every night and if 1 doesn't show up, the entire team loses... look at Carolina or Vegas, even if Carolina hasn't won yet, their window is still continuously open for more years to come... This is why teams like the Oilers, Leafs, Senators and Calgary haven't won in a long time. You can't fall for a player and never trade them despite them not being your franchise player... always try to make the 23 man roster better

And the Leafs will suffer because of it due to Marner wanting 13+ despite not being a 13 mill kind of player

Toronto's had a top 5 defence in the league this year and had Acciari, Knies, ROR, Kampf, Leafferty, ZAR and Kerfoot... that's a pretty decent bottom 6

Maybe it came across as arrogant; i didn’t mean it that way 🤷🏻but you need to settle down. The Leafs are the most popular - tv ratings, the # of leaf sweaters in away games - & the richest - franchise value, operating income, etc. there are other popular & rich teams too - Habs, Rangers, Flyers, etc Leaf fans take a lot of abuse but one of the main things we have going for us is the prestige and size of the fan base. Maybe you’re right that leafs can’t win as currently constructed but I could say the same about the oilers - what are you gonna do. We go again 🤞
