What I don't get about the Nylander situation that no one seems to be talking about: if the reports are true that he wants 10-10.5 million, it's safe to assume that's probably the most anyone would pay him annually on the open market. However, teams can only offer him a maximum of 7 years. That total contract will be from 70-73.5 million dollars. If the Leafs max out at a 9 million AAV, it will almost surely be on an 8 year contract. This will be a 72 million dollar contract. So, when people are saying that Nylander "believes he's a 10 million dollar player", I don't really get it. He's still making the same amount of money if he were a 9 million dollar player here. This leads me to three possible conclusions:
a) Nylander doesn't want to play in Toronto. He will only do so if he is overpaid.
b) This whole story is blown out of proportion. The Leafs and his camp will meet in the middle at a 9-9.5 million AAV, whether that's this summer, or at any point next season.
c) Nylander and his camp are stupid and can't do math.
