Why give up Theodore?

Created by: Jded
Team: 2017-18 Anaheim Ducks

Description
I just don't agree with losing Theo for shedding 1 year of Stoner $.. this is my view on how we could've still shed salary without losing such a high ceiling prospect.

1. Bieksa waives NMC or is bought out. Let's assume he won't waive, so this would represent a "worst case" scenario

2. Ducks trade Vatanen to TBL or Leafs for a 1st (see explanation in trade below)

3. Ducks protect:
Getzlaf
Perry
Kesler
Silfverberg
Rakell
Cogliano
Vermette

Lindholm
Fowler
Manson

Gibson

4. Vegas gets the honor of selecting one of:
Boll
Shaw
Wagner
Stoner

5. Vegas likely chooses Shaw, who is the best pick of a very weak lot

Result: Ducks salary cap hit down $2.1M
Ducks In: 1st round pick, Shea Theodore, Clayton Stoner
Ducks Out: Sami Vatanen, Logan Shaw, Kevin Bieksa

I would personally take Theo for Vats straight up, especially considering Vats' salary vs Theo's.
A 1st and Stoner is certainly worth more than Bieksa and Shaw. Even a 2nd rounder would be close to fair value there.

Now imagine if Bieksa waived the NMC, which I think would've been more likely than not. Vegas would've taken him, the Ducks would still have Shaw, and they'd save an additional $4M in salary.. so total cap hit down $5.5M.

I'd like to see the Ducks add either a LW to play with Getz or a Center to play with Perry (so Raks can move to Getz's LW), but I figured lets not over complicate this with more speculation :)

Additional Details:
A 1st rounder for a dman of Vatanen's ilk is a steal, as evidenced by recent defenseman trades. However, it is fair due to the diminished number of teams who could take on Vatanen before expansion (TBL already had a deal to give Garrison up to Vegas), and the fact that Vats will miss the start of next season.

Tampa could not have acquired Vatanen before the draft due to their own "protection" issues. I'll agree with you that Bieska could have left exposed (he wouldn't been claimed). IMO Vatanen should have exposed and would have been taken by Vegas, and the Ducks kept Theodore. Even better if the Ducks could have traded Vatanen to a team that room to protect him (like the Leafs).

That would've been true regarding Tampa Bay, however it would not have been the case after they signed the deal with Vegas which forced Vegas to choose Garrison. After having inked this deal, all other players on TBL roster would have been safe. That was the thought at least. But I agree, Vatanen to the Leafs for a 1st would work as well
