Tre fixes the Defense and Cap Issues

Created by: Gag1
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 6, 2023
Published: Jul. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Its pretty tough to address the Defensive gaps and fix the cap issues with this team. The Leafs come in just under the cap, but don't have any depth forwards on the roster which would be an issue.

If Robertson has a good camp he gets another shot but he could be sent down to the Marlies in exchange for Holmberg (who I think is the better player at this time).

Flames reject. At 50% retained we could get a better return.

That trade is so lopsided towards the Kraken. My goodness.

Maybe a little. But this is the situation the Leafs have to deal with. They are having difficulty getting Nylander to sign in a range they are comfortable with and the Leafs are well over the cap and everyone knows it. The two players (Oleksiak and Bjorkstrand) each have 3 years remaining and their joint cap its add up to the amount Nylander is expecting next year. Oleksiak is the type of player the Leafs really need and Seattle won't give him up easily. Bjorkstrand was good in the playoffs last year and has scored 20+ goals 4 times. Brodie has been a good player, but struggled last year, particularly in the playoffs. His $5mm contract may make it harder to move him. Once again the Cap is really going to be challenging here.

Other Options
1) Carolina for Pesce (good fit if extends)
2) St. Louis for Parayko (7 more years at $6.5mm from age 30 to 37)
3) Calgary for Hanifin (but rumors are that he does not want to play in Canada and won't extend)
4) Calgary for Zadorov and/or Tavev - only 1 more year left

It will be interesting to see how Treliving addresses this as the Leafs Defense is too soft and not strong enough to content for a cup (IMO).

Maybe Liljegren in place of Timmins. Or add a 3rd pick to the existing package?

I think at the deadline a 50% retained Tanev could get us at least a pair of 2nds. SO Lil + a 3rd is closer.
