What to do

Created by: gdli
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 9, 2023
Published: Jul. 9, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assumptions:

RFA re-up for 2 years and are locked in at the league minimum.

1. You have $5M of free CAP space to work with, not $6M. This gives the GM some wiggle room.
2. No contract buyouts until 24-25
3. Competing offer sheets are on the table for Miller and Lafrenière (and assume they are both
looking for the Rangers to make an equal or better offer.

Note: Contracts Kakko, Lindgren, and Schneider are up for renewal in 2024.

I think you’ve gotta prioritize Miller in this case over Laf if you potentially can’t sign them both. It’s near impossible to replace Miller internally at this point, while our depth at LW makes it easier to withstand not having Laf. In that case, you’d sell Laf for futures or someone on an ELC, sign Miller and bring back Motte. It won’t provide a lot of scoring, but will improve the defensive ability of the bottom six and bides time for Othmann to maybe make a mid year or late season addition to the roster (a sort of internal trade deadline acquisition). I hope they can keep them both, but if only one can be retained it’s gotta be the 2nd pairing d man with top pairing potential over the 3rd line winger with top line upside.

I wanted to leave the question of K'Andre and Laffy open to elicit other opinions. I agree that if you are forced to pick one, K'Andre is the keeper for the reasons you cited. That said, I would offer Laffy's rights for a second rounder. I have at least 5 teams and maybe more that are candidates. In addition. I have several positive responses from non-Ranger fans. I would be very interested in your take about that trade proposal. If the cash is there, bringing back Motte and then Othmann is a scenario I like. As always, appreciate the feedback.

I was waiting for your response. I would have gotten back to you sooner, but I was responding to several others re: my Laffy trade proposal for a 2nd rounder. Certainly, more if we can get it. And that wouldn't be my opening position. What do you think we could get for Laffy's signing rights? Look forward to hear from you on this question. Best Regards!
