Description
EK is owed $38M*25% retention is $9.5M the sharks pay out ($2.875M cap hit). Petry is owed $9.5M*50% retention is $4.25M the pens pay out. NET SJS take on $4.25M in actual money. Using Carolina buying out Marleau from TOR at $6m as a basis, the first round pick pays for the salary retention. ANA gets a first for the 25% of the balance retained (just over $7M actual money) and DeSmith
Petry is the roster player replacement to SJS, obviously not as good as EK so they get the prospect throw ins and picks.

I'm a pretty "go all in" type a guy - but that being said - I do think this is a bit much overall. I'd at the very least make them take Petry back at the full cap hit

Wouldn’t do it, I guess I’m just not that interested in EK.

If they take Petry full salary don't need to give up another 1st for 25% retained. That's so much for a 1st that could potentially be a lottery pick.

Agreed, its a lot. I like using the Toronto trading Marleau to Carolina as a basis. a 1st round pick for $6 that carolina had to be. I was thinking actually dollars not necessarily cap hit. If the extra 1st is kept, then theres still $2 million in cap hit that needs to be addressed. Just trying to be realistic about that it would cost. The only other way i see it working out is moving Rust and i just dont think that'll happen unless they can move rust with granlund and petry at full cap hit.

You could be right in saying that's what it would cost - I'm not saying it's necessarily crazy unrealistic. I just don't think it's worth it.

Karlsson is great, obviously. I think the team as is definitely needs some kind of upgrade like him. I just don't think he's worth 2 firsts, a 2nd, Smith, Poulin, Blomqvist and retention more.

I'd be comfortable with like Petry(full cap hit), a first, 2nd, POJ or Smith, and another "good" prospect from our system. Or even if you just did the SJS trade in your mock with no Petry retention. Anything more and I'm not sure it's worth it. As much as I think they need an upgrade like this. Yeah Rust definitely isn't going anywhere.
