Problem I see is 4.5 million dead cap when you have to resign Mathews, but maybe I'm missing something.

A late 1st 2 2nds and Fabbro, Come nowhere near getting William Nylander out of Toronto. That offer would easily be beaten elsewhere.

I think Fabbro is a good player, cheap, young and top right D and Nashville could afford Nylander and can lead their team going forward made sense to me, he might like that city and being the guy there.

Fabbro at best is maybe worth a late 2nd or early 3rd. Most around the league don't seem all that high on him. Plus there needs to be a lot more going back to the Leafs for Nylander than Fabbro and picks.

It's true but this year it would cost $9.7M if you can't move them and if Murray is bought out it would still cost $5M to play Brodie and eat a roster spot so my way of thinking is save the money this year and sign Samsonov first off and maybe a couple more guys to help you and eat the $4.5M next season

But that's outside the box most folks are inside the box like really, really in the box, boxed in you could say so I doubt if Murray won't start the first game and maybe Samsonov will be shelfed until November

But some teams make risky decisions I think TML vetos a lot and I think the GM'S have no freedom in this town lol

Pens decline, no room or interest in Timmins.

A massive overpay for the very middling 24 year old Frost. Rebuilding Preds have no interest in one year of Nylander

I don't see anyway around the 4.5m dead cap for next season if the Leafs wants to compete this season. Lots of UFA money coming off the books next summer for the resigning of Matthews.
But I will disagree with you (and so many others) that the " you (meaning the Leafs) have to resign Matthews." Leafs don't have to resign Matthews, and Matthews doesn't have to resign with the Leafs. It's called free agency. Matthews. Nylander, Bertuzzi, Domi, Lafferty, Giordano, Klingberg, (Brodie and Murray) are all upcoming UFAs in 2024. They all aren't going to be offered contracts by the Leafs, they all aren't going to accept the Leafs offer to resign. No big deal, just spend the cap elsewhere.

I never said you have to resign Mathews , however Treliving seems to think it.

Really? Do you think any GM, if going to say about a his star player, who has one year left on his contract....."Yeah, we don't think we are going to resign (our guy)?

Please don't believe anything a GM, player or coach says in public. They certainly aren't going to show their cards publicly...or demean a player or their team. Now I certainly believe Trevling and the Leafs would like to resign Matthews......but there is a limit what they want to pay, especially since the cap is unknown for next season.

I still don't know how it makes the Leafs better if they resign Matthews at 14m and Nylander at 9m. That's 4.5m more then they make now. Could the Leafs find better value at 23m in other players.

No however, he seems to go beyond just normal GM speak. I'm not saying it does. I think Kucherov at 9.5 is on of the great contracts in the league

It's win-now so you're:

- buying out one of your only reliably defensive d-men

- trading your 1-2 RW in his prime coming off a 40-goal season for a 25-year-old that hasn't met expectations and mid-tier draft picks that will take years to develop

- selling the farm for a center that might be a real boy but also might just be top of the crap heap on a bad Philly team, and giving him 5x5 to play 3C

This whole site has lost its damn mind.
