Description
Curious to see if Colorado might leave some spots open for younger players at the bottom of their roster going into training camp. That‘s not something this regime has traditionally done, and quite frankly they’ve struggled to develop prospects that should be playing in the bottom half of their roster (Kaut, Bowers, Greer, Kamenev to name a recent few). But as the top of their roster gets more expensive, they might have to rely on these inexpensive players to fill out a quality lineup.

They’ve always been pretty aggressive with college free agents, and landed some bigger names the last couple years (Meyers in 2022; Malinski, Pavel, Polin in 2023). Malinski will be 25 when the season starts, so (should be) already a more mature player. He could grab a rotational 6/7 spot and share time with Jack Johnson. I’d hope Meyers sees a bigger role after such a promising college career (but slightly disappointing rookie season). Pavel looks like he could be a stereotypical big, aggressive, versatile fourth liner. Not a college free agent, but Jean-Luc Foudy is also knocking on the door.

Most of these guys have 2 years left on their deal at under $900k. If they could get time this year and become real contributors in the bottom six F/bottom three D next year, it would give Colorado great flexibility to add a little more elsewhere.

If they do leave the door open for their young players to make the NHL team, I’d expect a couple of veteran PTOs in training camp as well.

I was just thinking the same thing.. maybe they sign Meyers and fill the remaining spots from within.

If that’s the case, Malinski stays down in the AHL and Hunt comes up. If Malinski isn’t getting everyday minutes, he’s better suited to be in the AHL one last year.

Don’t love Meyers on that third line. Would rather he center the 4th and one of the AHL guys gets a good look on the wing on the third line.

Can’t pair Johnson and Manson together, too slow, they’d get easily exposed

It’s a shame Ranta took off to Europe, he genuinely could’ve had a shot to break into the lineup this year

I still think they maximize the LTIR space and sign at least one more guy. Imo, they are more likely to go in with the D they have, using a Hunt, JJ, MacDermid rotation on the third. Realistically, they have two open forward positions. It's likely that Meyers is penciled into one of them (and I agree it shouldn't be higher than 4th line) for now, but he's still unproven and he'll be on a short leash. With the cup window open and some really competitive teams out there, it's hard to think they roll with two unproven guys. Right? I hope not.

I like where you put Meyers & Pavel. Meyers was a big time scorer and is better than a 4C

I think Meyers gets the Newhook treatment this year: Here's your chance. You show up or you don't. I understand Newhook's voiced frustration about being bounced around but he needed to seize the opportunity.
I think between Colton & Wood they'll get 40 goals/90 points this year. If Meyers can show up enough to get 30-35 pts, he's worth keeping around. Otherwise, he'll have blown his chance.

I think it'll be another signing at the 4C position over Pavel, but I agree with this. Pavel doesn't seem like he's ready at all based on reports from dev camp.

RE: Meyers
I’m no expert, but it seems like Meyers was capable of playing a better two-way game than Newhook at the NHL level. Even if all the offense

doesn’t translate, I think he could be a reliable bottom six guy.

RE: Adding other players
Just to clarify, starting the season with some you gets guys in the lineup doesn’t mean they’re locked into it. If they’re not keen on any remaining free agents (which they might be), why not give their internal guys a look before making a trade. I’d love to see them add Pius Suter personally, but we’ll see.
