If the Karlsson trade falls through, I'd look to buyout Granlund to get under the cap, send DeSmith down to the AHL, sign DOC 2 years, 1.25M, and add Tomas Tatar on a cheap 1 year, 1M contract. Tatar would add some proven scoring ability to a weak scoring 3rd line. Probably the best value option remaining in the UFA market.
Did Pittsburgh have any RFAs that went to arbitration?
Yes, Drew O'Connor filed for arbitration. While he's an improving undrafted college player who had a good showing at Worlds, he doesn't really have much room to ask for a larger salary. Some people think the Penguins may have asked (wink-wink) DOC to file to give them more flexibility for a potential Granlund buyout.
Seems like the best option to me, Tatar is a great grab for the 3rd line and the best option. It’ll be exciting to see DeSmith vs Ned for the backup G.
No problem starting the season with this roster. Definitely better defensively then last season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Andreas Johnsson make the team. He could be low key solid acquisition to the bottom six. Dubas has a history with him.

Forgot about Johnsson because CapFriendly doesn't have him on the roster by default anymore. I'd like to see what Nylander can do offensively, but Johnsson is a better fit in Sully's system. I would actually probably add Johnsson and waive Ruhwedel to WBS. Go with 14F, 7D, 2G to start. Ruhwedel has been a solid 7th d-man for us for years, but he didn't look good last year. Give those reps to Smith, plus we have Friedman, Ruhwedel, Butcher, and Shea in WBS who we could add if we need more defense.
