Love the idea, from anyone but us! We don't have the pick surplus to go that direction and comp that sheet. I hope a team like Colorado or Vegas does is and either straps the Oilers cap wise or gets a fantastic player out of Edmonton. The only scary part of that is the first round picks that the Coilers get for that compensation, there could be another talent similar to Draisaitl coming up in a couple years who they would then again have on an entry level deal! I don't think they would be stupid enough to let him walk for any amount though, who knows, same guy that traded away Seguin and signed Russell to a 4x4, either way I am hoping for a good ol offer sheet!

Yes to offer sheets.

and if no one offer sheets McDavid, the most valuable player of all time, then the league's rules are clearly broken

Interesting choice giving up 4 1st round picks and likely the ability to resign Tkachuk for Draisaitl

fyi -- for a $9.8 million salary, the compensation for Edmonton is 2x1st, 1x2nd, 1x3rd

Draisatl definitely signs for that money, maybe even at $7.8 million where the price is 1x1st, 1x2nd, 1x3rd.

The trick is to pay with late round picks, and Calgary has a good enough shot at being top 5 based on this roster (just questions about bottom lines and depth for injuries. Ignoring Mike Smith)

While McDavid apparently is about to sign 8 x 13.25 after July 1. So he won't reach restricted free agency and cannot be offersheeted.

The offer is below $9.8 million -> not 4x1st compensation.

Furthermore, the Flames still have plenty of cap room to match any offer as is their right.

Finally, odds are Tkachuk signs at the Gaudreau level of about 7 million x 5 years. Draisatl might have a burr under his saddle for having to return to junior for a year even though he was ready, because the team was a clusterfuck.

wow. I wonder where the limits are. Some players will definitely take a discount to play with McDavid, and the cap might start increasing over that term but it's the old saying of giving someone enough rope to hang themselves.

FYI. For 5 years yes. For more years NO. Grand total $ divided by "5" years.... In this case 4 1st.

Offer sheet compensation is valued at the total value of the contract divided by 5.
So 9,800,000 x 7 = 68,600,000.
68,600,000 / 5 = 13,720,000.
So the amount that goes towards the compensation evaluation is $13.72 million.

I know this is confusing, and an often forgotten about rule, but it is the reason why only like 4 offer sheets have ever been successful.

Excerpt explaining it: For example, a seven year contract with a cap hit of $7 million would have an offer sheet value of $9.8 million ($49m total value divided by 5) - worth four first round picks instead of a first, second and third like a five year, $7m per year contract would be./em>

How can you offer sheet Draisaitl when Calgary doesn't have all their draft picks to make that happen. Starting off with no 2018 1st round draft pick.

Points for creativity, but:

1. As stated above, Calgary doesn't even have the requisite picks to make an offer; and

2. No one is taking Troy Brouwer. Vegas had the chance to take him for free, and chose DERYK ENGELLAND! instead. They certainly would not be giving up any draft picks, let alone a 2nd rd pick, for him.

3. Same with Bouma. Flames are stuck with these contracts for the year, I'd say.
