Actually, yes you can it happens at the deadline quite frequently, usually on players with 1-1.5 mil cap hits not usually on guys with barely league min contracts lol

Why would the habs do that? They're basically retaining cap for a player that they don't want to get basically the exact same guy, who they also wouldn't want

Cause they could flip Brodie at the deadline for a 1st.

Petry has little value even at $2.3M. Brodie has plenty of value at $2.5M

It's not Brodie at 2.5 though, if the habs are retaining Petry, its Brodie at just under 5, and I can't see Brodie getting a first if he's only worth Petry retained to the leafs as a contening team

Well to the leafs he's worth Petry @ $2.3M and 2.7M in cap space.

At the deadline if a cup contending team can add Brodie at $2.5M they would easily pay a 1st. Every public analytics model has him ranked 1st or 3rd best defensive D in the league.

It's strictly a cap move for Toronto to get a worse D and save $2.7M.
