he is a 8 x $6,750,000 type guy -- solid middle 2 defenseman

Hanifin is worth about 6.5 mil/yr but if he becomes UFA some team will offer him 7 mil/yr maybe a bit more... As long as it's not the Flames and they trade him before then that's good for him.

I can see him signing an extension in the 6m-6.5mx7-8 yrs range if he's traded to a team he wants to go to. But if he manages to go as a rental, then hits the market. Definitely would not be surprised to see him go 7m~ range on a short/med term deal. And probably slightly less to a team he wants to go to on a long team deal UFA. But we're talking 250k~ down to 6.5~6.75m, not like a sign a trade where he may sign at 6 for the same term.
