Hate to see Backy go out not on his own terms. Most likely is the end for him. Hes an all time great and im glad he was able to help lead us to a cup.

With that being said, McMike getting to play C and $9.2m in cap space really gives us the opportunity to make a high end move.

Will be curious if we look to make a move this season or wait for the offseason.

Would not be surprised if Nylander just went from a pipe dream to #1 target in the off-season for GMBM.

Absolutely with Backy and Mantha gone thats $14 million in cap space not counting the cap going up. If Oshie retires this offseason we will be in a rare position to successfully retool on the fly.

Im expecting to see a Nylander like move at the deadline once GMBM knows for sure that backy is done

I actually don't expect anything at the deadline, though I suspect I'm in the minority on that. There aren't a whole lot of good options on the market (Lindholm, Garland, Konecny maybe) right now and I think GMBM might go all in on free agency instead. My wish list next year would probably be Nylander or Reinhart, and a Soucy-esque LD that can either play 2nd or 3rd pairing effectively. Maybe a speculative buy like Duclair if they have space, though I'd rather see the spot go to Miro or Leonard if he's ready.

Unless they really turn things around in the next month, only thing they're doing at the deadline is selling

Only thing I don't particularly like there is trading Jensen, only to sign DeMelo. Would rather keep Jensen and, If Iorio plays well out of camp, the Caps moved TvR back to the left side and scratch HHA+Alexeyev.

This has been such a strange start to the season. Both lucky and unlucky to be 5-4-1, some guys playing really well in some ways but really poorly in others, Backstrome retired, all in all could be a lot worse

If Kuzy and TVR can't go tomorrow would love to see

Ovi - Strome - Wilson
Milano - McM - Mantha
Miro - Protas - Phillips
Malenstyn - Lap - Oshie

Fehervary - Carlson
Sandin - HHA
AA - Jensen

I like the lineup. Think AA and HHA swap though, AA has more experience on the right side. Could maybe be Fehervary on the right side as well.

Two mistakes from Kuemper and AA and just like that they're down after what was a pretty good period. I've liked a lot of what this team has done after the first ~5 games but they just don't have the talent IMO

Tough to win when your stars don't make star plays and 3 of your defenseman are pretty much unplayable. McMichael looks really good at least! Would love to see Miro up ...

This team is in such a weird spot. We would be far better off rebuilding (obviously) but there is still some talent and a promise was made to ovi. However, we also will have an abundance of cap space this offseason to work with. But, free agents keep getting worse as most of the good ones are locked up before they ever get to free agency.

Wonder if GMBM can go back on his word to ovi, or if he plans to have an aggressive retool this offseason.

Shepard looks awful. Every rebound is just sitting right in front of the net

I feel like it doesn't happen for the Caps often, but I love winning games that we should lose.

Lindgren with the game of the year so far. 7-1-1 in the last 9 -> pretty darn good

Lindgren looked great. I will say though, his great start happened almost the exact same way last year, and when he slipped just a little, the team defense imploded around him. Caps will need Kuemper to come back strong and take some of the workload off Lindgren before he slips under an excessive workload. This might be the thing to really get Kuemper going though. We saw something similar during the cup run with Holtby getting benched and coming back better after Grubauer took the workload.

how did kuzy and oshie do yesterday

kuzy looked awful. basically all of Vegas' 5v5 advantage came from the top line getting completely caved in, everyone else either won or held serve in their minutes. to be fair to kuzy he took an absolutely nasty headshot at the beginning of the 2nd, but he didn't look too good before then either. oshie has looked how he has the entire year. does a lot of little things right but his finishing has been awful and has a tendency to make boneheaded plays in the D zone.

will second that lindgren looked incredible. McM, Protas, Strome, and McIlrath (!!!!!) looked very good to me as well. LJ and AA super shaky, top line atrocious, and Carlson and Sandin were iffy.

did they deserve to win that game, not really. there was enough good stuff going on though that it to me wasn't completely unwarranted. they definitely had stretches of controlling play and generating chances. vegas is also the best team in the league

will also say it was the best atmosphere at cap one for a game this year by far, really hope they keep up this good play
