It's an interesting idea from a Sharks perspective with about fair value. Sharks get off the Hertl contract and gain a 1st with no retention. Lysell is Boston's top AHL prospect, but I don't think he's on a slam dunk development path (compare him to say Tristen Robins for example and their numbers are similar). You may need a 2nd team to retain on Kahkonen for a 4th or something.
There is a problem with all the contracts coming back to the Sharks since we don't have enough spots. We already took on so many journeyman players in the Karlsson trade that we would probably need to waive some legitimate NHL player for no value. However, if Tomas Hertl went to Mike Grier and demanded a trade to Boston (necessary since he has a NMC), this would definitely be an acceptable solution.
From my perspective, you have a bunch of journeyman players you can cut and move to the AHL if you wanted. Nothing on the San Jose roster that you’d consider moving down would stop this deal even though I agree it’s a lot of moving parts.
I really have very little interest in Kahkonnen. I just included him because you’d have to bury him or Skinner if this trade went through. I’d be perfectly content with Bussi this year. It’s more a polite gesture rather than a desire to secure the player
With regards to Lysell, both his upside and downside are immense. Robbins is not near Lysell from a talent perspective, but the questions with Lysell are clear
1. Will be let others create for him?
If he utilized his elite speed with players doing tape to tape passes, my perspective is he’d be in the NHL right now. He tries to use his puck control and handle to create his options. It makes for some great highlights, but he’s basically leaving his greatest asset on the table too much because of it
2. Will he find a balance between reckless and fearful in attacking the net?
That cheap shot he took last year appears to have toned down his aggressiveness going to the net. I think there is a happy medium from where he was and where he is.
His upside is immense if he accepts what he is. Significantly higher than many prospects rated higher than him, but his downside is pretty big too. His history with another top prospect in your org should help.
