  1. Garland, Conor
Additional Details:
Mantha has a higher cap hit but is on an expiring deal. This frees up 5.7m next year for them to sign / extend players.

Capitals can add a late pick or something but imo this is a swap due to Garland extra term

With Backstrom out I think they hold on to Mantha until the deadline and move him as a pure rental

Canucks say no. Why would they take cap space back like that? Garland will move in the off-season when the cap moves up, so why trade him for more cap this season? If they're trying to get rid of him they can wait and still have him for the year.

I think I explained it pretty clearly. Mantha has 1 year Garland has 3. You eat more cap for a season then have 5.7m in space going into next year. Seems extremely obvious what the benefits are to that lol

What I am saying is the Canucks get rid of Garland for free in the offseason due to the cap going up and free agency being likely crazy. If the Canucks can do that, then there is no benefit to the Canucks to trade him in season for a cap dump to get his cap off the books for next year.

Even if they can't do this they still say no. Canucks are looking to compete this year and are doing great so far. This trade is a huge step back for competing this year. They don't need to trade Garland and won't do it if it doesn't work for them.

Lol Garland had 2p in 9 games and has a sizable cap hit w term. You could argue that he ACTUALLY has less value than Mantha atm. You’ll likely need to move a 2nd or something to dump him next offseason but again you’ll be freeing up 5.7 GUARANTEED next offseason instead of hoping a team wants a player making 5m on a 18 point pace.
