Package for Weegar

Created by: SGB88
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 2, 2023
Published: Nov. 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think Weegar is the piece the Canucks should target if they continue to play like this. His good years match the Canucks windows and his backend downside should make him reasonably affordable. His contract fits with the Canucks long-term cap structure. I know people will rage about trading Hunter given how he's playing and 1st, but you've got to give value to get value.

If Calgary goes into a full rebuild, which it looks like they should, they should trade Weegar when he's at his maximum value.

Assuming Brzustewicz continues to light it up until the trade, maybe comes down a bit, but let's say he's at 1.6 (on pace with Tony DeAngelo d+1, Ryan Ellis d-1) to 1.7 ppg (on pace with Ryan Ellis d+2 season) halfway through the season in his d+1 season.

Weegar isn't a bad defenceman but 2 big issues I see happening is Myers cap hit is hopefully going to be used to cover the raises to Hronek and Petey. So getting Weegar hurts their chances of keeping the truly Important players. I'll say from a cap perspective it definitely fits, but comes with trade-offs for sure. This isn't a move I would be making in isolation. There's enough space from Cole and Beau coming off the books and the cap bump to sign Petey and Hronek still fill out of the roster with warm bodies.

That being said I think you really need to trade Garland for this to make sense, either for the cap space, or for some of the pieces you need to fill out this roster properly, like D or a 3c.

Personally, my view is, that the best thing we can do with Garland, if it is possible is swap him for a similarly paid 3c with a similar term. Pageau makes the most sense to me since I think you can probably just swap them more or less, but could be a Copp or Ryan Strome. It could also be without term, like Henrique or Roslovic, but I'd actually prefer at least 2 years of term.

My major thought process for this season if it continues similarly, I doubt we keep this pace up, especially without adding, is that we should be adding pieces to compete this year, not just to compete, but to avoid free agency next year or even the year after.

I also think you can use that before you make the moves to go to Petey and Hronek and say here's our plan here's the cap we need to sign you at. How do you feel about that? This is what we need to do to compete. What do you think I don't know about Hronek, but I think that works with Petey.
