Overreacting to the hot start

Created by: Lactic_Flaccid
Team: 2024-25 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 1, 2023
Published: Nov. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. We are backlogged with some pretty quality bottom 6 guys and LHD, why not sell a few of them to bring in a top pairing RHD to pair with Minty for a few years while the youth reaches their prime years

2. The RHD listed below are a culmination of a quick RHD search and plucking ones I think have a greater than zero chance of being on the trade market, are defensively sound, and are considered veterans. They are admittedly not all great options, but I think it gives a good look at the RHD market that may be available to us

Seth Jones - 2030 (Full NMC) - Term is a concern
Mackenzie Weegar - 2031 (Full NTC) - Term is a concern
Colton Parayko - 2030 (Full NTC) - Term is a concern and not sure the Blues are willing to retool
Justin Faulk - 2027 (Full NTC) - same as above but term is manageable
Rasmus Andersson - 2026 - Probably the best contract to bring in if we are confident he could play top pairing, one of my my top choices
Rasmus Ristolainen - 2027 - I have doubts about him playing top pairing
Connor Murphy - 2026 (10 team no trade list) - Could be a decent option depending how Chicago handles their retool, but not sure he would be made available
Justin Holl - 2026 (10 team no trade list) - Pretty certain that Detroit wont make him available, but he would fit in great
Zach Whitecloud - 2028 - Has never played 20+ minutes in his career, but solely looking at age and contract, he would be a good option
Cody Ceci - 2025 - Would be a good option as he has proven he can eat minutes, but would Edmonton make him available? Probably not unless they are capstrapped and desperate
Matt Dumba (FA) - Has kinda looked ass this year, Klingberg 2.0, but would still take a waiver on him on a two year deal
Brett Pesce (FA) - Would likely need to be a sign and trade

3. List of trade bait guys who can be apart of a deal to bring in one of the RHD listed

- Helleson (dont see him making his way into this lineup unless there are a few injuries)
- McGinn (was never a fan of bringing him in, so it wouldnt hurt my feelings to see him go)
- Luneau (We dont need an offensive defenseman on the right, we need someone who is defensively sound and Luneau has value. I feel like he needs to be traded 100% before his value drops)
- Rico, Silf (before TDL this year)
- One of Fowler or Zellweger (if Zell is ready to go next season, and Minty looks ready to take the top pairing spot, it might be worthwhile to consider trading Fowler despite how hard that may be with his NMC)
- Max Jones (if McGinn is not traded)
- BO Groulx (if Carrick is resigned to be the 4th line center)
- Lundestrom (if Carrick is resigned. Gaucher, Carrick, and Groulx would take the two bottom 6 center slots and one healthy scratch. Ideally in this scenario, Gaucher proves to be ready to be the third line center moving forward, BO seals himself in as 4C and Carrick is either signed again to be a permanent healthy scratch or allowed to walk in FA the following year)

Thoughts on how we handle the right side of the defense moving forward? Who on the roster could we see traded in the near term?

If I were you, I would try to get Anderson, I think that the price would be a little bit above what VAN paid for Hronek due to the fact that he has some term, CGY fans will say that you dont have a shot at getting him but if CGY looks to burn it to the ground then he would be one piece that could really hep to jumpstart the rebuild. I would imagine that they would want a piece like Zellweger, a centre like Lundestrom, and a first. Now that may sound like a lot but you are getting a difference maker to be your #2-4 through the value of his contract.

I don’t think we target a RHD in a big trade like that, I think it would be a similar package for a top end RWer

He is probably my top choice, his contract, age, and fit with the team are all pretty sound. I also wouldnt mind Pesce, but he is owed a new contract that may price him out. For Andersson though, we get two solid prime years out of him, can either resign him or let Noah Warren take the spot if he develops well enough. Keeps the flexibility within the team as they reach their true competitive window. Not sure I would be willing to part with all of Zell, Lundy, and a 1st but I also dont think that any of those pieces are off limits in order to bring him in.

I think so too. Either him or Fowler but I dont think the odds of the Ducks trading Fowler are more than 1%. Plus Zell isnt over 6 ft so you know what Pat is thinking. I'd personally prefer to see Fowler out but I also know that could be a hot button topic with the fan base

Does anyone know what the plan is for Luneau this year? It doesn't make sense to me why they are keeping him on the roster if he isn't going to play. He didn't look quite ready when we have seen him (understandable he's only 19). We can't have him in SD because of the Q, so just send him back to the Q to get playing time and bring him to ANA or SD next year. Am I missing something?

I don’t see Fowler being moved at all — Zellweger would be the big part of a trade for a big time RWer

I’d lines I’d run on the back end next season :

Fowler Gudas
Mintyukov Helleson
LaCombe Drysdale

You could switch Helleson and Drysdale as needed imo

He was just sent to SD on a conditioning loan

Assigned him to San Diego on a conditioning stint this morning. My guess is that he is down there as long as the rules allow it and then goes back to the Q. Im not overly concerned with him staying with the team for a couple weeks but I agree too much longer and it just seems kinda odd

I recognize we have an over abundance of bottom 6, but j also don't think it's necessarily a problem. We're going to have a couple guys on IR at any given time with Cronins system. While this hot start is great, I don't expect it to last. They are playing playoff hockey, it's hard to do the for 82 games, it will just wear you down too much. It's fine now with a lot of youth and depth, but the guys will need to slow the burn or were going to be in for a long February and March.

Henrique, Silfverberg, Lyubushkin will be gone. I agree with bringing in a RHD, but j wouldn't want to pay more than a Hronek price. Maybe Zelle is worth moving, despite his size he's built like a tank, but his hockey IQ and defensive ability are usually a question, but then again, we have a few more years to marinate him in the AHL, and we frankly don't want to go tossing out depth. We can worry about moving him when he gets close to loosing waivers eligibility.

Anderson would be great, if the price is right. I also am still of the opinion that Risto would be a good pickup. He has the size, grit, and endurance to be an adequate #1 RHD if he keeps his game simple like he did last year in Philly. With his contract, he should come relatively cheap too. He may not be a great #1 RHD, but I would rather hang onto this year's first and grab one of the many RHD that will be available in the mid first round and just acquire someone serviceable instead of buying a true #1 that I don't think we're ready for yet.

We could pull off a Dougie Hamilton move for a guy like Ekbald and it would go okay, but j don't want to use draft capital when we have cap space to weaponize instead.
