yes but just playing the model of a good Rielly pair - see Schenn, Boosh with the Leafs - don't play RD1 mins but seems to work well enough pairing Rielly with that type of player, allowing us to form a Brodie - Tanev shutdown pair. Boosh is the RD3 on this team but just playing the chemistry, mins would go Rielly - Tanev - Brodie - Liljegren - McCabe - Boosh in that order

Hey at least you send some semblance of a prospects unlike the moron who posts this trade daily. It's a bad prospect but at least the idea is getting closer.

The Flames taking on Klingberg is strictly a service to the Leafs, there is no need for the Flames to take on another teams garbage at this point. And if it's "to flip him" no one wants him, he was traded for next to nothing last season and has a higher cap hit not than he was traded for last year. If the Flames are selling off for futures they will find a better pick than the Leafs 1st or a closer to NHL ready prospect without doing the other team a big favour.

to me Tanev is worth a late first and I'd be surprised to see you get anything more, and if they're selling off they'll have the cap space to take on Klingberg to make the deal work, so the Leafs send a low-mid level prospect as a thanks for that. This would be at the deadline, so Klingberg would only be on the Flames for like a month and a half - and might actually work as a stopgap so they don't have to rush any young guys up if they sell off 2-3 D at the TDL

They're full of young guys who have been in and out of the line up so far this season DeSimone, Gilbert, Solovyov, Oesterle is a fine stop gap and Poirier has been hurt who is the most NHL ready of all of them. There is no need to shove Klingberg in a line up where he's not needed. Tanev retained at 50% is worth a 1st round pick no doubt about it, the Flames would be better off just taking a pick or a better prospect than taking on Klingberg for a pick that I assume you are thinking will be bottom 5 in the draft. The way Klingberg plays at this rate a low end prospect is not enough to justify a team taking him on. Klingberg to Calgary makes less and less sense every day. Tell your buddy in the comments above, I think he's quick on the ignore list trigger cause he can't take no for an answer.

ok. maybe Tanev for the 1st straight up could work then Leafs find a team willing to take Klingberg for a low/mid prospect and retain/flip Klingberg for another pick in the 3rd to 5th range

That's a deal I would take all day long. With the Flames trajectory and the contracts they're locked into, in my opinion, which frankly means a whole lotta nothing, they should be targeting close to NHL ready prospects and picks that can make an impact in the next two three years. so they can turn around and compete within those albatross deals. I would ideally value prospects over picks and want to get players in the 19 - 22 age range that could be stuck on a depth chart elsewhere.

I don't hate that at all. Fits really well in the Calgary pipeline on the right side, fills a needs, Calgary retaining 50%.

ya for me I really like Niemela, think he'll be great, I just think he faces an uphill battle making the Leafs over the next few years given how small our blue line already is and how desperate the team is to compete over the next few years. But I do really like him and a team like Calgary would actually make a ton of sense for him.

Timeline wise it feels like it makes a ton of sense, especially if you can get Tanev on a hometown deal for a couple competitive years. I don't know how quick they would want to move off of Neimala with Liljegren never getting a full 82 games in and playing a similar style as Neimala. Wonder if it would be more beneficial to move off of Liljegren now before he looks for a raise and use Neimala to fill his spot at a more cost effective cap hit while the Leafs are still pushing for cups.

nah Liljegren is severely underrated I find - one of the steadiest D on the Leafs, probably the #3 after Rielly and Brodie and should surpass Brodie soon enough. He was drafted as an offensive D so he does have the skating and passing elements but he's developed more into the good stick, good positioning, good skating style of two way D that doesn't necessarily wow offensively as much as anticipated - but that could come later, I'm really high on him. Also a lot bigger than I think some people realize - not a giant, but 6'1 190lbs. You're right that Niemela will probably morph into that too - 6'0 180lbs right now but should continue to add weight, offensive D learning to play the Liljegren style with the Marlies right now. But that took awhile to develop in Liljegren, I don't see Niemela at today Lily level for a couple years which aligns fine with CGY timeline but Leafs can't afford to lose Liljegren today. Apologies for the rant here lol, just love Liljegren on the Leafs and think we can't afford to lose him

Hey, rants with valid information, tangible ideas and thought out opinions are always welcome. That's super fair and maybe in an unfortunate way the injuries are a blessing in disguise at the negotiation table this offseason, if there is one thing Treliving is really good at it's getting his RFA's at really good numbers so that bodes well for Leafs fans. Neimela is likely a better target for the Flames anyways, more realistic and a better timeline.

yup. Seeing Niemela as a future Liljegren isn't a bad way to look at it. Will take a couple years to get him up to speed on the defensive end but would be solid for Calgary.
