Such as maximizing your opportunity to compete while Skinner is productive (and Gibson in this hypothetical), Tage is at his peak (big men fall off fast), and you have Dahlin, Tuch, Power, Benson, Mittelstadt, Peterka, and Quinn on bargain deals. Sure you’re only guaranteed 2 years of McDavid, but that’s where you bet on yourself to be successful with him and convince him to stay (can even compete against Toronto since he’d still be close to home).

No trade for McDavid will ever get him close to enough. This is an underpayment. Plus he will probably re-sign anyways lol. Buffalo has a top 3 future and a ton of cap, besides the fact that the team is in Buffalo everything else makes a ton of sense.

This roster leaves:

McDavid, Tage, Peterka, Quinn, Benson, Mittlestadt, Skinner, Rosen, and more. Still super stacked and all on good deals besides Skinner who would be easily dumped in 3 years if needed. Probably wont need to be but is very possible if he does. Come on man this is Connor McDavid.
