Description
Whoever coordinates the power play sucks man. We’re supposed to have the best of the best which we do. But they always rinse and wash the same dish and it’s just too predictable. Our power play can really be our downfall. I’m hoping one day they’ll get it together. The slightest adjustment I’d make is trying Eller out more on the PP. He’s been playing good hockey as our 3C and our 3rd line has looked it’s best for the first time in a while. Our 4th line isn’t as good as I’d hoped it to be. Was hoping to see more offence from them but I guess none of them are really playmakers. Overall I believe in this team a little bit more after seeing the kind of hockey they can put together when they are playing good. Definitely still flaws on the team.
On another note, I’ve been seeing Rakell’s name pop up here and there as a potential trade candidate. I don’t think it’s really worth trading him for cap reasons. I guess my question is for other Pens fans, is it really worth it to move Rakell? I get he’s struggling but he’s still doing everything he can to really find the net and creating opportunity. I just think if we wait a little bit, it would be more worth it.
Last thing, it seems like Ned and Lud are close to returning which is good but somebody in the lineup has to be waived or moved before they return. Not unless if Ludvig is just kept in the minors. Hard to say considering we rolled with Shea/Joseph/Ludvig to start the year.

The personnel on the PP is definitely not the problem, it’s the antiquated scheme that Reirden runs. I’ve never really been a fan of him as a coach. Karlsson should almost always be up top QBing and distributing, he’s amongst the best in the league at it. Yet Reirden has him in the Ovi spot for half the PP. It makes no sense. More importantly, there needs to be far more movement from the forwards in the zone. Stationary players taking slap shots is far too easy to defend. This isn’t the 1990’s, Todd. As for your Eller suggestion, I wouldn’t overwork him. Just keep him in his current role that he’s overachieving in.

As for Rakell, he’ll get it going offensively. Lest we forget that he had 60 points last year. His first few games were tough, but he’s been giving it his all since. Even when he’s not putting up the numbers, he’s smart and confident carrying the puck. He’s great for puck possession, which is so valuable on Geno’s wing. Moving him would be a mistake.

With Ned and Ludvig coming back, I suspect Hinostroza will be sent down. It sucks. I’d love for him to stay at the 4th line RW because Carter tends to destroy all speed and momentum that the line manages to bring. That’s the role they need to play, speed and disruptive forechecking. Carter goes in and all of that goes out the door. Carter won’t waive his NTC, but he should be the 13th forward. If you ask me, now is the time to move POJ. With him out and a pick in Ned and Ludvig can come back.

Agree with pretty much all of that

Yeah I’m eager to see how Ned plays once he’s back bc Jarry is still showing inconsistency but I mean our defense has hung him out to dry more than a few times but he’s never been a goalie to steal games for you

I want to see Ludvig get a string of games… if he can move well which by all accounts he can maybe he’ll be able to clean up the netfront better…

I’m so sick of the power play too but I don’t think the issue is rierden even though I don’t like him a lot… no matter what he says the guys will play however they want… they have to screen the goalie and gets shots on goal simple as that but they overthink it constantly…

not sure what’s up but nieto and acciari both have been pretty invisible and they both have a reputation for putting up points and being premium grinders but they haven’t done squat yet so hopefully we can find a way to get them moving

It's almost at the point where the PP is so bad it's impressive. I feel like you have to try and be that bad with that personnel haha
