The numbers just do not back that up imo. His shot shares and expected goals are pretty impressive

Matthews took a top 15 defensive season and added it with his strengths of his top 10 defensive season... So why is JT Miller ahead of him...

and where is Barzal and Stone?

He's ~60th in E+/- and ~100th in DPS amongst dmen which is fine for a rookie but shows he's nowhere close to deserving of this team

Haven't watched Miller play but I know Matthews has been fantastic defensively too

Jesper Fast and Jordan Martinook should be on here as well... both of them are absolutely amazing defensive forwards... they are both top 3 in xGA/60 by forwards and Jesper Fast is the best forward at SCA/60 and Martinook is 4th

Evolving Hockey's model doesn't seem to concur with that... -.8 Defensive GAR
