Trades

NYR
  1. Tarasenko, Vladimir ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Situation in Ottawa is not good, team is likely not playoff-ready just yet (therefore Tarasenko provides little value since he will be a free agent again in the summertime). Sykora is a 19yo forward currently cooking in the AHL and is the Rangers' top prospect behind Othmann and Perrault. By the time he is ready to crack the NHL Ottawa should be in a much better position.
OTT
  1. Sýkora, Adam
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Giving up a top prospect isn't ideal, but this is under the assumption that Drury locks up Vlad for another 3-4 years after his current contract (would not want to give up Sykora for effectively a rental). Was an amazing addition last year that immediately gelled with the Rangers and put up points in the playoffs when other people went ghost. Fills a need at RW, is a fan-favorite, I could go on and on about why the Rangers should bring back Tarasenko

More thoughts on the Chytil situation -

If necessary the Rangers could just put Chytil on LTIR until the playoffs and run the same lines that they currently are doing now (except Tarasenko would play with Kreider and Zibanejad instead of Wheeler)

Leafs don’t have a lot of cap space and I doubt they do any moves to the forwards before the defence

Ik it wasn't an actual trade it was just somewhere to write an alternative solution for Chytil and cap space

Question I have is if Kakko goes LTIR...do they even need OTT to retain salary?

NYR Cap situation pretty confusing- Fox getting back off LTIR...maybe KK goes to LTIR...Chytil on IR- maybe LTIR retroactively?

    RussianRangers9 just proposed 1st + 2nd for Tarasenko

I think I'll go with that offer.

    From my understanding....

Kakko just placed on LTIR and is expected to be gone "long term" but not for the entire season. So once he gets back, his 2.1m resumes and we lose that extra space. Just like when Fox is back tmrw, we are going to lose his extra 9.5m that we had when he was out. Chytil is also placed on LTIR now (but is eligible to come back whenever, since he was hurt the same day Fox was and the LTIR is back-dated to then) so until he comes back, we have his 4.4m as well in addition to Kakko's.

However, imo, if Kakko is only going to be 100% as of March 30th (or something similarly that close to playoffs), just keep him out and on LTIR until the playoffs actually start, because you don't have to be compliant in the playoffs (like Vegas and Tampa)

With Senko specifically.... he's at 5m right now so the Rangers would have to clear at least 2.9m of cap space in other areas IF Kakko is going to be back before playoffs (probably by trading someone else like Goodrow). But if Ottawa retains 50% they only have to clear like 400k in space which might be easier

That might be better for the Sens but I don't realistically think that any NHL team is going to give up a 1st round pick (yes even a late first) for a 32yo winger who is kind of streaky, has Vlad's injury history (I say this as nothing against Vlad and as a Vlad fan), and who is pending UFA. Unless it's a middling team that's desperate to claw their way into the playoffs and thinks Vlad can save them (think Pittsburgh Penguins-type) or a bottom-feeding team that can afford to waste that kind of asset in the name of "veteran leadership" (maybe someone like the Sharks as they were rumored to be interested in him last summer). And I doubt Vlad would waive his NTC to a team like that

When the Rangers gave up a 1st in the STL trade last year, it was a little different because A) they were paying the Blues to take back Sammy Blais, B) it wasn't the Rangers own first round pick, it was from Dallas and was later than the Rangers' own pick, and C) we also received Niko Mikkola in the trade who was fantastic for us and filled a needed hole as solid 6D.

All that to say, the Rangers probably are going to hold onto their 2023 first because it's the only one we have. So if a Tarasenko NYR trade doesn't work this time around because of that, no harm no foul, but I wouldn't expect to get one from us

Yeah but considering what Tarasenko returned not even a year ago, a team is probably going to offer one. As the seller, I don't care if it's not the Rangers

But Vlad will care. Because the teams that would offer one will be places like Pittsburgh (desperate to claw their way into the playoffs and thinks Vlad can be a savior) or San Jose (would want him for "veteran leadership" and can afford to throw away that kind of asset especially if the 1st is from somewhere else and not their own). And he likely wouldn't waive his NTC to a place like that.
